The dog looks fine.
The following is from memory, that might not be completely correct.
The 1990 lower unit. On top of the gear housing is some letters, this denotes the gear set needed to rebuild the lower. I think there can be 4-5 different sets, A-D I don't think any special tools are needed to install(not positive)
I believe(not positive) that the pinion comes with the gear set.
Try to find a manual for that year. It will cover the rebuild.

The bearing is spinning fine, how do I tell if it is compromised? I mean it should not make any noise right even thoigh it is a niddle bearing. Without oil it does feel a bit rough. Can it be saved?

Hard to say without look at it, but if the needles looks good and the race looks fine with not marks or pitting reuse it.

It's attached to the gear. Is this the forward or reverse. It goes all the way in up to the shifter.
I am watching a video of a guy doing the exact drive and it seems to be tye forward gear.

The gear and roller bearing furthest way in the gear housing is for forward.
Looking at the pics it looks like you have to replace the roller bearing and race.
Clean the gear and roller bearing and lube it with thin oil.
Spin the bearing and listen and feel how it sound when spinning.
Maybe it is reuseable.

Part number 18 and 19 are seals.
18 seal for drive shaft to water pump housing and 19 seal for drive shaft to gear housing.

Looks like that is a part of the cover and it has broke from the rest of the cover.
The cover has a grove for an o-ring and the two seals #18 and 19 are seated in the cover too.

That's what I thought too. The cover has the o-ring on it still. I will show a picture in the morning. I haven't found another cover so am wondering if I can still use it

Here is the cover and the piece they go into each other. Don't know if it is broken or it goes seperately. It has 4 grooves that it fits in. Second picture shows the areaon the cover. Should I JB weld it together?
Or silicone it?

I am a bit puzzled, have never seen that typ of cover but it looks like it is broken.
I can not determind that.
Maybe jerryjerry or pnwboat will chime in.

It actyally fit back pretty good and I hb welded it. That holds the o-ring in place.
Should be all good now. Last night I did the forward gearupper shaft and bew bearings. Replaced all the needle bearings from the spool assembly and the 2 seals pmus big o-ring. Also on the plastic Cover I changed tye 2 seals and o-ring. So today I willinsert tye upper bearing race and then the retainer. Get the cover onand water impeller. Do the bottom shaft reverse gear spool assembly and spacers plus retainer and be done with it. The right side motoris fairly new now top to bottom. Hope it will last awhile.Got to putit on water adjust the carbs.
By the way when I pump the squeeze pump I noticed gas leaking from the top carburator.

OK I installed the gears and the shafts with retainers. I am at the cover and water pump case. the top of the black cover in the center where the impeller is has an opening. There is a robber seal in the picture does that go on top or inside the black cover?

I got it could not understand why there's no seal inside the upper end between the impeller and the black cover.
The drive is mostly done waiting for one of the water pump gaskets that I thought I had.
Will do a leak test too. I hope there are no leaks to the inside anymore.

The "robber" seal is for a different motor. :)
The kit covers a bunch of motors, it might cover 20-50 different ones.
That rubber seal fits a Mercury motor.

Hey Jerry above for the leak from the top carb, when I prime it gas comes out I think from the bottom gasket, you mentioned the needle seat. Is that still available. I have the rebuild kit, don't know if it's in it. I was gonna open and cleaning adjustthw floats if need be. So the kits are cheap.
Don't know yet ifit does it while engine running

If it only does it when you prime the system?? Not sure I'd worry too much about it.
When you squeeze the ball your putting the system under a lot of pressure.
The fuel pump is a real low pressure system 2-4# (if that?).
Make sure the screw/screws holding the bowl on are tight.

Check valves out. Where are these seals?
How do I get to them?
