Recently purchased a 17 foot Whaler with an 89 Evinrude 100XP Commercial engine on it. Overall, it has run great the 6-7 times I have had it out, however I have a few issues I need help with

1-Ran 6 gallon tank and 1 can of seafoam through engine Friday to remedy some poor idling. Boat ran fine, but cut out and would not start minutes after I switched back the the regular fuel tank. Got boat home and it started on first crank when I ran on flaps in driveway. Had it out for a few hours yesterday trolling and cruising with a few starts and stops and it ran best yet since I have owned it. What could have caused the no start, vapor lock?

2-Have noticed black oil leaking from where shift rod goes into lower unit. Noticed after I have run boat a few hours and then taken home and parked driveway with motor tilted up. Nothing to the point it drips on ground, but a few inch streak.

3-Oil also is leaking from top of engine down under the plastic housing that covers mid section. I took off the plastic cover and looks to be coming from somewhere up in engine itself where I am unable to see and get to. What could this be?

The waterpump and VRO system were replaced in 2007 by prior owner and overall the engine runs well after 2 Seafoam and gas treatments. I have noticed though that the alarms are not working as I do not have a beep when I move key to start position

I am new to boating and could use whatever advice you guys can throw my way. I would also like to find an Evinrude Tech in Northern NJ to give this motor a thorough inspection and service

Thanks,
Ed

To my knowledge no rebuild on the carbs, at least not recently.

Any insight in the oil leakage at top end?

Thanks

you will get a little oil in cowl check your blow by hose if it has one ,bottom of air silencer to block,
if your carbs are not spotless you will continue to have probs .
i just finished a crossflow 175 and had built the carbs with sierra kits
without changeing floats ,couldnt get it right ,
took them off soaked them overnight blew them out
and uused evin kits with floats ,and set link and sink underload
purrs like a kitten know i leave my motor in the down position
when it sets up

The oil I am seeing appears to be coming from possibly the exhaust system right under the cowl into the midsection of the engine. there is a plastic housing that surround this area and wen I removed it found the housing covered in black oil. would an exhaust leak create such an oily mess?

I am a newbie and at a loss here

1. Hard to say. Was the fuel line hooked up with the primer bulb arrow pointing toward the engine? Don't ask me how I know that can be an issue.

2. Decarbing creates a bunch of soot and nasty black drippings.

3. You may have a small exhaust leak at the exhaust cover (bubble cover between cylinder banks). Gently re-snug the lower bolts.

Also, make sure your recirc. hoses are all hooked up. The recirc, hoses run between the cylinders and the intake manifold.

You may have a small exhaust leak between the powerhead and exhaust housing. Make sure the powerhead bolts are tight.

As mentioned, also make sure your air box drain tube is hooked up.

Re: 1989 Evinrude 100XP Issues

These engines are prone to powerhead base gasket failures with age. In addition to the black, oily mess, exhaust gases can leak out into the hood and get sucked back into the engine. The smoke can cause running issues. Other than the above items, a bad base gasket is not a fatal problem. Run the engine with the cowl off and see if you get exhaust smoke. You may have to pull the powerhead and replace the gasket.

Re: 1989 Evinrude 100XP Issues

Thanks again guys, I will take a close look this evening.

In regard to the oil I am seeing leak from the shift shaft housing on the lower unit. Is the gasket/o-ring assembly in there a fairly easy part to replace? Few inch long streak is what I see with engine tilted on bracket and boat parked in driveway. Lower Unit Oil looks good though, not milky....

I am not that thrilled with the Seloc Manual and plan to get the Factory guide ASAP
