Re: 1989 Baretta Success 185 restoration

Here is the pic from day one of this thread.

I have decided against painting it at this time and have opted to try sanding and buffing. I tried hard to capture the dullness of the gel coat, but it is hard to do with a white'ish color. I went after the worst part (nose of bow) first to determine what was needed and I am starting at 400, 800, 1500, seems to be working great. Only problem I have run into thus far is where the stripes were above the rub rail, they stand out now that they are removed even after sanding and I am afraid to sand too much. Nice shiny non-faded gel coat under them. It is no biggie, I planned to re-stripe it anyway.

That is it for now. I will try to get some shiny pictures soon!

Here is my "test" area. Note the left side of the pic is dull and the right is sanded and buffed. I just need to continue my momentum. The stripe lines are not as noticeable in the picture on the right, but they are still there. I sanded more than I wanted to in an effort to make them go away, but I do not think they will. Like I said, I will just re-stripe it.

Re: 1989 Baretta Success 185 restoration

i just went through and read your thread from start to finish. I just came across an 87 baretta for $500. i went and looked at it today and its in rough shape. Im not a mechanic but can do all of the cosmetics myself. The one im looking at runs good, but needs a complete cosmetic overhaul. it has a new prop and tires on the trailor, so i figured for $500 i could put it in the garage and work on it over the winter. after reading your thread i think im gonna go ahead and get it. im very interested in how you did the tinted bed liner on the floor. that though never even crossed my mind but i think its a good idea. was there anything specific i should know about doing it before i try?

Re: 1989 Baretta Success 185 restoration

I have a 1989 Baretta and replaced the flooring. I have replaced the carpet and removed the rear seats and put new carpet around the box that the seats rest on. I have six blocks of wood approximately 5 X 7 and an inch thick that I do not know where they go. Can you help me out?

I will be using poly resin.

I will try to post some pictures tomorrow after some more progress is made. I have done one engine mount and plan to complete the other tomorrow. I kind of took a bassackwards approach to the mount rebuild, but it will come out stronger than the original. This will be self explanatory once I get some pictures of it.

I took a break from the engine mounts today and started removing the left over fiberglass from the stringers. I was then interrupted by a friend needing me to get the blades off of his ExMark mower. I never went back to it...

Do you have a picture of the blocks of wood? I do not recall having any such thing in mine, they could have been added by a previous owner?

This string is dated. Should I post here or start a new one? I have a 1984 success 19ft with a 3.0 mercruiser. The floor and stringers are rotted.
