Hope the nuts and bolts are easier than mine was. Don't know if from factory but all bolts under there was steel. Rusted badly. PM sent.

I got tired of trying to use stripper/scraping and just wire wheeled it off.

Same here, remember a respirator mask. It helps limit the amount of fuzzy boogers!
Great work, your really tearing into it!

So I'm going to clean off carpet glue then lay down carpet glue , then scrape out foam then add foam....got it! On another note the garbage man came this morning, he took my 3 full cans of old foam away, so I can resume my job of pulling it out!

Also I promised some photos of the cuddly framework to a guy who is also restoring a similar boat, those photos will be online shortly. I didnt forget!

Well I had a few minutes today and empty garbage cans , So I refilled them again! With rotted deck and soggy foam... I took out the last section on deck , it was literally MULCH , it didn't come out in 1 piece , it came out with a snow shovel. I want to repeat myself , the foam was the only thing keeping my foot from poking through with each step. I didnt even have to drill any rivets on the whole section , it just slopped up like mulch!

Any how I got a look at the bilge pump which does not look so bad , however I already bought a new one, and I put the plug in the boat to get some rainwater and see what I have as far as leaky rivets , so far no drips!

I have a couple questions ...

#1 ... is the piece of wood on the back of my transom factory? Will I be replacing it with the transom?
003.jpg

#2 In my photo you will see small rounded head nails , keeping the cover over the transom, what kind of nails are these and how do I remove them without damaging aluminum?

Yup, most likely factory. You can replace it if you like. Many fellas feel it is unnecessary and leave it off. Others feel that it adds strength, keeps the OB from beating up the alum skin, and dampens vibration.

I happen to be in the second category but I replaced mine with 1/4" thick aluminum that was completely sealed up with 3M 5200 against the hull skin. I did that on both my Jet Star and Sea Nymph projects. I think installing wood back there is just asking for rot on down the road.

what kind of nails are these and how do I remove them without damaging aluminum?

I've had a bit of trouble finding stainless nails like that locally and alum ones just would seem so soft. So, I used very small SS screws instead. Just pull em out very carefully and you will be all right.

I think those nails are spiral too. I'm with Jas, go with screws you'll probably never find replacements.

I used a small screwdriver to pull the heads up then pliers to back then out.

Most likely you will be able to save those nails. They pull easy especially if your transom is rotten. Those used to be available at most any hardware store in small packages. Used to be with the assortments of carpet tacks, upholstery tacks. brass nails, etc. I bought a pack back in the mid 90s to do an 18' Star Craft, done 3 others since and if I can find where I put them should have more. Let me know if you need some and can't find them locally and I'll try to dig them up for you. Beware of the small stainless screws as they can snap or the heads strip easily.

Don't know if that plywood is factory or not. Sylvan Offshores are known to have weak transoms. As Jason said, use a piece of aluminum plate. I just recently acquired a piece of 1/2" that I'm putting on mine. Much stronger than 1/2 ply.

I've found a liberal application of 5200 under the transom trim strip eliminates the need for those nails.

Im going to start removing the foam that was poured in , I think I will use a flat pry bar and pop it off in sections as big as I could , anyone have any secrets to this grueling task?

Great pics but not what I'm needing. I need to see the wood framing that supports the " hood". The area around the hatch where you can climb out onto the bow. Would like to know how much arch is supposed to be on the board right under the lower windshield. Thanks

I cut mine off with a whiz wheel or cut off disk then knocked them through with a punch.

You may have an easier time working on that boat removing the foam if you drill out the rivets and take the stringers out of your way. You will find that most of the rivets are loose and need to be replace any way.

Well , after work today I went out and gave it heck with a small pry bar, I got all the pour foam removed from 1 side, and blistered on my hands!

Tomorrow unless it rains I will get the rest out of the other side , However I,m waiting for garbage day because my all my cans are full of deck and foam .... again...

I got lucky towards the front of the boat when a large section came out with a snap!

Also I found NO loose rivets so far , including the rivets on the stringers , all solid tight!

good sign?

Also here are a few pics of the framing under the bow , I hope this helps steve , will take more when I go in to remove all the wood

Thanks. Those pics will really help. Good news on the rivets. Mine were all loose but probably due to boat being abused as you will see when I get my rebuild thread going.
