1987 Sea Ray Seville 20ft

Hello,
all my name is Mike and I wanted to see if any fellow boaters could give me some pointers . this is my first time with a big boat so I will apologize now for any stupid questions that I may ask. before hand ... Well I recently aquired the boat above .The motor works but the stringers, floor, some of the vinyl needs to be replaced. Ive been doing a lot of reading and watching you tube videos no how to replace the floor . This will be my first time taking on a project this big . with all the read I did I havent see an estimated cost on the repairs. I know this boat is on the older side but its been in the family for a while and would like to bring it back to life. My father is great in the carpentry department and has experiance in playing with epoxy, so I have that covered. Also I live in central Texas lots of heat and moisture plays a part in the rebuild.

now questions

1. whats the average cost to replace the strings, storage boxes, and floor front to back?

2. whats the agverage time lenght to repair the boat ( I know weathers a factor)

3. would it be eaiser to take to a local shop and have them do the repair? If so what would be the est. cost for the repair i just want to make sure they arent ripping me off .

see my responses below . . . Welcome to boat restoration. Lots of good info here.

Two more question if you dont mind . Seeing that the boat needs a new inside redone if i were to put this on CL what could I ask/ expect for it ? Also if were to redo the insde would the value for resell go up later if were to resell? Just looking at my options Paying up to 6k for a shop to repair is on the high side for a 24yr old boat . but then again if I were to buy a new boat I could have and will have the same issue .

Ayuh,.... A Rotten boat has No value, it's a Liability....

The motor, if it checks out Ok, is worth 'bout $500.... ditto the drive, 'n another $250. for the transom assembly...
Figure up to another $500. for the wagon...

'n,... No, you'll never recover the expense of rebuildin' it...

Yup, I agree know rotted boat probably under $1k with trailer etc. the boat has no value at this point because the cost to repair is equal to or perhaps greater than the value in good condition

ok thats understandable , seeing the 50-70 of the floor needs to be replaced ( ski locker area is the most damage and port side locker ) would it be ok for me to drive on the lake this season then in the fall start the rebuild in the off season? the transom look and sounds solid as well as the motor mounts . thats from the videos I have seen on YT .. i was thinking of just puting a new pice of plywood down .any suggestion?

also the reason im doing it like this funds are low figure i can save over these next 7mths and have enought to either do it myself or take to a shop and not have to worry about the head ache..

Well, if you need stringers, etc. there is no telling how much strength is left in the boat. The downside is that the hull could fracture in waves/big wakes, etc. So, it is a gamble on your part. Make sure captain and crew are wearing life vests . . .

It sounds like you have soft floors and visible rot in the ski locker. Chances are once you pull up the floor everything is going to need replaced. I highly suspect transom too. If you put this boat in the water, I would keep it in the no wake zone and keep life vest on at all times. You would be risking loosing your entire investment in your boat, also possibly lives. You have time to fix it before the season starts.

Ayuh,.... Believe me, We All know what yer sayin',...
But,....
We also know that boat's Rot, from the bottom Up,....
By the time the deck shows Rot, things below it are usually Gone to mush....

Hello Mike and welcome to this disease we all have called "boat ownership"...
It comes on slowly at first, but then becomes an all consuming infirmity which can't be stopped...
The only cure is to go out on the water with the boat and make as many FUN and SAFE memories as we can...

That being said, these old boats are usually rotten to the core and that can make for a very UN-safe and NOT-SO-Fun boating experience...

If the engine and drive are in good working order and the trailer is in decent shape, why would you risk losing a perfectly good working engine with a hull that may end up in the deep? Then have no use whatsoever for the trailer...

Take the advice of the guys who have posted here so far and give up on the desire to get the boat wet right away and start your project of reviving this Family fun machine...

It is going to take a lot of time, sweat, some blood, a chunk of change and the desire and determination to see it through, but in the end you will end up with a craft that is both Safe and Fun, you will know that this boat is solid, and you will have acquired a skill set few ever attain...You might even find it to be kinda fun...:faint2:

The bright side to all of this is that you can work on it as time and money become available...much better than the obligatory monthly payment for a zillion months, that come with the purchase of a new boat...or saving up the dough to buy another used boat and find the same types of problems...

Hey, whatever you decide, you are the Captain and it all rests on your shoulders...if you decide to go the restoration route, we'll all be here to advise, inform, give you some friendly encouragement and maybe even some good natured harassment...

Thank you all for your advise this weekend. And all you have a great point, thought it over and all of you are right. I have 3mths until summer begins here in TXs. So this week I will get a game plan together and Hopefully start in March. : -)

I have seen all of FriscoBoater's Boating and DIY Channel video, and These are great videos and are pointing me in the right direction. Thanks " Fisco "..

I would like to know if anyone else has restore a 1987 Sea Ray Seville 20ft ? My biggest fear is getting the stringser wrong. Since it all seems to be rotted out how would I get a good mesurement ? The ply would I will be using Frisco method with the foam templets also with the transom.

Dollar when you do your demolition take measurements and more measurements. When I removed my deck I left a 1" lip. Leaving the lip makes measuring your stringer height much easier. This link might help Cutting the stringers for the Sea Ray - YouTube

If you're planning on rebuilding here in Texas, you'd better get started with the demo. You don't want to be in 100 degree temps trying to fiberglass, paint, etc. You won't get back what you put into the boat if you sell it, BUT, if you spend $30,000 for a new one, the minute you pull it off the lot, you'll lose more than you'll invest in this one.:facepalm:
When you get this one restored, you'll know what you have. You'll know your boat inside/out, top to bottom. You'll have a boat that's as good as new (or better), but at a tenth of the cost. Plus the pride in knowing you rebuilt it.
Be very careful, however: rebuilding boats can become very addictive!:faint2:

At least when you get done with the rebuild you'll know what you have.....A brand new boat is huge bucks and a used one you never know what you get....You will be able to do this.....If I can so can you My thread has a bunch of info if you care to look.

To get my stringer height I ran string lines marked at 1 foot intervals from bow to stern and measured down to the hull....then transferred the numbers to cardboard and connected the dots to make a pattern.

can anyone tell me what motor I have ? I have looked at all kind of site and get different info. I belive I have a Alpha 1 gen 1 transom assembly and drive shaft . looking for the coorect info somif I need to order parts I would like to get the correct ones
