yeah, its a fishing boat. Not too worried about dings and scrapes - I was at first, but all the work went into enjoying the end result- and you really can't do that tip toeing around and crying every time a scrape happens :)

Actually, the great lakes are pretty clean these days. Lake ontario salmonoids (all species) are the key indicators of the state of the fishery in terms of pollutants, since they are at the top of the food chain. Current recommended meal sizes and frequencies are actually more favorable than many ocean species including Tuna. Tests on Lake O. salmonoids consist of grinding an entire 4 year old fish (as shown above) and testing the pulp. As you know nobody consumes a fish this way, and heavy metals are more concentrated in the non-muscle areas of the fish anyway creating a worst-case recommendation.

In 2010 A private research group tested a representative sample of Lake O salmonoids, and this time only tested muscle samples, minus the lateral line (removed) and found that there were only negligible amounts of pollutants found. The levels found would correlate to no recommended restriction on meal size or frequency.

I'm not a meat fisherman by any means, but based on that I do eat them. Tastes the same or better than store-bought & hasn't sat around for weeks.

That's real good! I guess the EPA and the Zebra mussels are doing a good job cleaning up the lake.

How are those big lake O walleye and perch testing these days? Are they fit to eat now?

You hit it right on the head, grub. Zebra mussels actually seems like they are doing a large part of this. The perch and walleye are both good to eat as well, although the fishery in Erie seems to be stronger than ours. There is actually a commercial fishery for perch these days. Canadians can buy Great lakes perch in the supermarket.

Also, it seems that the trout and salmon are now learning how to eat the Gobies, another invasive species brought in my freighters.

I have an article in an older In-Fisherman talking about how that is the case. Apparently fish will key on them in any water system that also has Sculpin as well. So not only are all types of fish eating them, they are also an artificial bait useful outside of the Great Lakes.

One year(ish) Update:

The paint is holding up great! Spent 10 days moored in water this summer, along with being used almost weekly and it is hard as a rock. The interior is doing good as well, with the exception of the spray-in bedliner not sticking too well to the sealant around the edges of the deck. 100% cosmetic and not that bad... advantech is like new.

Glad to hear the paint is holding up well. Refresh our memories with the kind of Paint and technique used.

I used a mixture of black and aluminum colored rustoleum to result in a metallic titanium like color. In the sun it looks silverish and in the shade it looks much darker. Pretty neat. It was sprayed on.

How do you know the Advantech is like new when you have it covered up with that goopy bedliner stuff?

How do we know that the Advantech didn't disintegrate into the bazillion wood chips that were glued together to make it a couple weeks after you finished work on the boat and you replaced it with proper exterior grade plywood and didn't tell anybody??? Hmmm?

Just kiddin' ya Carpe:laugh:

Glad to hear everything is holding up well and you're getting out in the boat.

Are you storing the boat inside when not in use or keeping it covered outside?

Thanks Carp, it's still one of my favorite "Tinner" paint jobs. Very kool looking how it has that "Chameleon" look to it and changes colors.

haha, Grub. Always making waves! Actually there is a back piece that is removable so that I can get into the bilge area. This is the wettest of all of the areas and it's holding up well.

It's stored outside, covered most of the time. I like to leave it uncovered after I take it out in order to dry it out completely. I'll probably post this as a separate thread, but here is a sneak peak of a video of her in action:

Oh, and also - I named the boat... SNAFU!

It is an endearing name. As boat owners we all know that a trip on the water most of the time involves some kind snafu. This is my way of accepting it and moving forward.
