Hey guys, I just upgraded from kayak fishing to boat fishing for me and my boys.

Bought an 87 dyna-track 156, 87 Evinrude 70HP VRO E70ELCUR motor.

Cpl of questions. VRO does not work, guy said he's just been mixing in the tank. Is it worth fixing?

Only dash tach that works is the trim, speed, gas, and whatever the other was(didn't pay close attention) don't work.

I found the thread talking about service manuals and wiring diagrams but all links seem to be going elsewhere.
I would love a manual on my boat/engine so I can see where all the on-board wiring goes. As well as get some new pull switches(ones jerry-rigged).

I would fix the vro....well worth it.

I assume the missing puzzle is the tach. Very much needed for diagnostics and proper prop pitch.

Manuals are everywhere but if you just need some wiring color codes there is lots of people to help you out here on that.

The links in the sticky are wrong locations. Crowly marine doesn't have them available. And we'll just can't find them. Unless I'm blind.

The trim tach does work, that's the only one. Yeah I'm going to stop at the local marine shop and ask about the VRO just to get an idea of cost. Until I can locate the manuals.

Price of a new VRO pump may shock you.-----Before spending beer tokens on this motor I would do a compression test.----Post the numbers here.----And does the hose for the tell tale come off the side of the block or off the top of the block ??----And you need to install a new impeller in water pump before your first fishing trip.

Here are the wiring codes.
Trim feed is always independent from the other gauges. Speed often is fed by a pressure setup on the back of your boat. .The faster you go the higher the water pressure pushing into a little tool at the stern. This translates into air pressure moving the speed gauge around. there is no wiring involved. It is not precise at all. Most people use a gps for speed readings. The one you did not recognize is most probably the voltage gauge. The '87 engine is a 2stroke so you do not have an oil pressure gauge.

The hose comes off the bottom side off the engine.

I wouldn't even begin to know what part that is, as I said new to this. As well as can't seem to find parts manual on this site.

On this boat I have rpm, mph, trim and fuel. Only one that works is trim.

No lights work, nor aerators.

Don't have owners manual nor can I find it online.

I pulled the cover off, currently grabbing plugs right now.

This picture is what where the VRO should be. And the hose coming from the tank is capped off as you can tell in the other picture.

Ok so the vro that is installed is one that does not mix oil and gas, needs to be premixed. So all good there.

Now I just need to get lucky and find the manuals for boat and engine

That is not the pump that I would install on a 70 HP like that.---The 438557 is the correct one.

If you can find a used vro someday the rebuild kits are reasonably priced. For now just get other things fixed and get it running. Like racer says, compression numbers and post. Make sure this motor is worth doing anything to.

Wiring wise, many of those things you described have nothing to do with the motor. Sounds like bad connections and fuses perhaps. Learn about marine wiring. As far as books, there's plenty. The second one is best.

Pulled aerator and ordered new one, got stuff to do new bunk boards. Honestly I may tackle re-wiring everything on the boat. Too much is bundled and ziptied.

Also bought that book!

Noticed on either the rpm or mph(cant remember which. It has a plug on it but don't see a matching end under the dash. I did order new pull know switches as well. He said he replaced the bilge pump one(wrong depth to go in dash) because the switch wasn't working but the pump was.

What are your guy thoughts on fuse panels? I see inline fuses everywhere!!

What am I looking for? Could it just be build up and need decarbed?

Wide open the boat runs fine fyi. Here where I live also the lakes are not that big(northern indiana) so would mainly use trolling motor.

no miracles but try a strong dose of a good decarb as per specs may help who knows ...no harm in trying..

get youself a small kicker for trolling and... back-up :)

There is an old minnkota 565 28lb on there(white squarish top).

"get youself a small kicker for trolling and... back-up" I am having trouble deciphering this, can't tell if being smart ass or serious. And if serious I'm lost...lol
