Re: 1987 Bluefin Sportsman 1900 - The Fun Begins

Had big plans for painting the trailer this weekend now that the trailer is home, but had to work today. Couldn't stand the thought of not getting it done so I dragged it down to the shop and stayed late.IMG_20130720_170043.jpgprimer,IMG_20130720_190825.jpgfirst coat,IMG_20130720_200807.jpgsecond coat. Gonna have to make a trip down there tomorrow after church to put the wheels on and clean up. We are gonna need the rack on Monday morning. Will post with wheels on tomorrow. Should have a light delivery mid to late week. Gotta pick up some wood for bunks. Has anybody had any experience with the bunk glide material? Hope all is well on your projects.

I have the Taco Glyde Sliks on my trailer and really like them, just don't take the winch strap loose until you get the boat over the water... unless you want a "dry land" launch.

TACO? Trailer Glyde Sliks | Bass Pro Shops

Put that trailer out in the hot sun so that paint can cure, that many coats that close together will take a while to cure and will scratch and ding easily until it is cured.

I use cheap outdoor carpet from the big box stores. Make sure to round or bevel any cut edges on the bunks and use stainless staples.

Thanks for input on slicks. Did you butt them up against each other or space them out? So on an 8 ft bunk are you using 8 ft of slick? Did you carpet your bunks also or go with just the wood? I used a relatively quick hardener in primer and paint so that I could get the three coats on. Had about 45 min between each coat. Still though, will be picking it up later and will sit outside after that. Don't plan on doing anything to it until later this week when lighting shows up.

OK last of the trailer pictures...until the lights come and bunks are installed. Really like the way this turned out. I figure between lights, wheels and tires, steel, axle assembly and bunk boards and brackets/hardware. I am into this for about $700. I know I could have gotten into another trailer for that but there is no telling what I would've had to do to that one. Really liked this paint and am considering using it on the bottom half of the boat. Original plan was white, but the black looks so good. It is old stock we had at the shop, a single stage automotive paint. I have access to more so that is why I am thinking about going that route. He it is with wheels on. Wheels need cleaning and tire shine needs to be applied but you will get the idea.IMG_20130721_152337.jpg Carp, having trouble getting picture of trailer with wheels to load will have to get different picture.

Black bottomed boats catch more fish,......

I have no scientific data to back that up,...

Just the personal opinion of my supper successful walleye tournament fishing mentor,...........

Oh,...And I would skip the slick sticks until you try it with the bucks,.....

Unless you using crappy rural boat landings I doubt you'll need them,....

Well it has been awhile since I have been able to post anything. Been doing a bunch of little stuff that doesn't merit posting. Cleaning up hardware, priming and painting hardware, stuff like that. Was installing bunk brackets today when my dad showed up. So as payment for his dinner I had him help me flip the boat and get it on to the trailer. Joe is at camp in North Carolina and Mike was at band camp here at home. Dad and I got the boat on the trailer and it doesn't fit half bad for rough fitting. Bolted some 2x4's to bracket and eyeballed it and used tractor to lift bow. Once we had bow on we pushed from behind and she sttled out half way decent. Will need to fine tune. If anyone has any suggestions on set-up, please let them fly. Didn't really know how this was gonna work out after doing all I did to trailer, so, so far I am pleased. Boat sits lower on trailer, seems to fit well on trailer, and now have wider footprint for stability. So far, so good. Will have to post obligatory pictures tomorrow as I had to feed the help and neighbor needed my help and tractor moving stone.

Re: 1987 Bluefin Sportsman 1900 - The Fun Begins

Yesterday we adjusted bunks to boat. Wasn't too far off but minor adjustments were needed. Did decide to go with the bunk slicks. They showed up but we don't have them installed yet as the bunks need to get painted or epoxied. Since some of the guys here have been using the Deck Restore products and I am considerind using it also was thinking of applying that to bunk boards and then installing slicks. Thoughts and comments appreciated. Got boat off of trailer and flipped and need to prep bottom for black paint. Started fishing wires for trailer through rails and thats where it ended. Had high hopes for hull prep tonite but that didn't work out. Maybe tomorrow if weather will accomodate.

Thanks, it feels better and I'm hoping it will make launch/retrieve as easy as possible. Now I need to get the boat bottom repainted and back on it!

Thanks for stopping by. Have you heard from the mechanic yet? Is it splash time?

We got the bottom of the boat prepped Weds night, Thursday washed out and so did tonite. If the weather holds tomorrow morning I will be spraying. Keep good thoughts for the weather.

Well weather held up, maybe a little too hot but low breezes and sunny with some clouds. Just finished second coat. Got lucky and only had 3 bugs decide to commit suicide, and one blade of grass blew into paint. Off to the store for some things to help me complete wiring on trailer.IMG_20130810_132140.jpgIMG_20130810_132157.jpg Here's hoping the''black bottom boats catch more fish'' thing works in my favor.

Well not much to report on since yesterday. Got the panels cut and sanded for the fender steps on the trailer. Also got the inside of the fenders cut and sanded. Was able to apply first coat of Restore to those and the tops of the bunks before it was time for plinking with Joe. Good day all around, Church, boat work, shooting apples. Hopefully canget second coats on pieces before work then first coat on other side when I get home tomorrow night.

Glad to have you along Johny! Boat work will resume after I get trailer prep'd, painted and 'lectrofied. Welcome aboard questions and comments always welcome. Is the 1950 outboard or I/O? Did it have livewell and where at? Looking/thinking about positioning on that. I would really like to be done before you get started!

For some reason this thread is not notifying me when you post? So I have missed out the last few weeks. Yes the 1950 I have is an Outboard version. Yes I have a livewell up front on the port side i believe. Can take pics for you if you want to see the layout it has before I tear into it. I just removed the seats today as my first move on the project lol. EDIT: my boat is a 1900 not a 1950

Re: 1987 Bluefin Sportsman 1900 - The Fun Begins

Came home tonite all full of **** and vinegar. Was planning on getting my newly sealed bunks installed. Problem came in when I found out I hadrilled holes to big for 3/8‘‘ carriage bolts to bite. After screwing with it for too long decided to pull them off and fill holes with the remainder of my G flex and try it again tomorrow. Anybody see any issues with doing this? I would hate to have something stupid happen as a result. Plan is to re-drill holes, correct size this time, in holes that have been filled with epoxy. I could moove bunks forward or back a couple of inches and drill into solid wood, but was thinking now that holes are filled with epoxy if I drilled into that the connection would be waterproof. Thoughts or comments?
