Re: 1987 16 ss

Hey dozerII, just curious about what gauges (brand/style) that you used? I need a tach and that would match my color scheme perfectly. Also I was just reading back through ur thread and I thought i was alone in the world of twisting off SS screws! It would drive me insane; SS isn't suppose to break like that... if only i had read the grease trick earlier! oh well i got the job done anyway.. good looking out though!

Hey Dozer....

Your pictures really show how great the hull came out!! Interior, hull and the new bimini top look fantastic as well.

Where did you get the steering wheel from? The old plastic one that came with my boat, I would like to replace... just curious.

Like the bow protection on the trailer... typical Canuk... Hockey board!!

Looks great!

And I noticed that the front of your trailer folds!
do they sell that in a kit, or was it a feature of the trailer?

It seems to me that there would be a market for your boats. The 16' & 18' SSs are a great platform for fishing or skiing. Have you tested the waters to see how you could do selling your restos. You could provide simple, well crafted almost new boats to customers that will just have to add outboard power. Is there room for profit in what you do? You appear to accomplish this sort of work with ease and efficiency. Could you produce a cost effective alternative to a "new" boat?

Thanks Piece, the gauges are Teleflex Lido signiture. I twisted off lots of screws before trying that.

Thanks IM, The steering wheel came with the boat, it even has the Starcraft decal in the center. That puck board is almost bullet proof.
Slicker than snot. The entire rig is slick.

Thanks Otte

Thanks Gib, Ez beat me to it but that is the kit, it works great and fairly easy to install.

Thanks GLG, The big box stores carry it Totem , Homedepot, it is about $80.00 a sheet but worth it. We built the bow protector out of 27 feet of 1"tubing, 12"of 3/4"rod, two sheets of puck board, for a total cost of $190.00. I quess a saltwater version would have to be aluminum, and they are custom fit to the boat and trailer so you would have to bring your boat out, and then we would have to drink wobbly pops together.

Awesome Sparkliness!!!

Thanks 65, thought about it though will watching the Big Bang Theory one night!!

Thanks bunker, we will see how this works this spring the brown 18SS will be going up for sale in about a month when everyone starts looking at boats again. I don't think there would be a lot of $ in it if you add the labor, but I do it because I really like doing it so I won't add that in. They are definatlly cost effective when compared to a new boat, with a good reliable used motor. But people won't compare them that way because the HIN # still says it's a 1979.

Better everyday Glen.

I have to mount my Bow Mount Trolling motor someday soon, and I'd assume the Bow cap needs to be reinforced? I have a couple ideas, but I wonder if you could tell me if and what type of backing / reinforcement you used.

My Motor is 70 lbs-thrust and I'm going to use it often, so I need it rock solid. I've also been thinking about mounting an Anchor Winch on the bow cap , which my 2 month long back-ache might make it necessary.

Am I the only one who thinks those Trailer Tongue Hinges are scary?

Hey Paul, on both my boats I put 3/4"ply between the existing boards, then a layer of 1/2"under that. On the rebuilds I soak a piece of 3/4"ply with water and clamp it in a curve then install that under the bow aluminum for real good strength.

The tongue hinge has seem some rough gravel roads and is working real good, I'm sure they have overbuilt them because of liability.

Thanks again Glen, sounds nice and strong.

I know I'm being paranoid, and there's probably not tons of sheer force on the tongue, but I couldn't help but feel uneasy about it.

Re: 1987 16 ss

Okay, the last week has been spent working and finishing all the little things, as well as taking an off the shelf cover and making it a fitted one, ( what a job). Here are the final pics other than the splash as soon as the water softens. This will take a couple post.
