Could be the main jet....easy to get to.

Main jet is about 1/2 to 3/4 past the carb bowl drain nut. I use torch head cleaner tips.

Float bowl could be off or needle.

Butterfly opening all the way?

If your going to spend the time cleaning the carb, grab a " factory" rebuild kit so you have all new gaskets and the instructions for proper setup.

I've ordered a rebuild kit in the meantime. I've never worked on an outboard carb. I'm assuming I can't clean it without taking it off and apart correct? Or is there a way to clean the main jet without disassembly?

Here is three options.

Don't remove carb but remove bowl drain, idle circuit screw and pump the primer ball. If the carb is good often time that will flush it.

Remove carb and do a semi-clean, inspect and r&r the parts.

Pull carb and do a complete rebuild.

When doing option 1, you can poke a cleaning tip into the bowl drain. The main jet is right behind it

If you did not do a link and sync the butterfly valves may not be opening all the way.

No gray fuel lines, non-ethanol fuel and I always put additional fuel filters on.

Another tip... and some do not agree on here, to remove the carb without removing the starter assembly, hit the port carburetor nut softly with a punch or screw driver to remove it.

Saves quite a bit of time. Re- install the same way.

Ok I'll try option 1 first. Also I should mention that I am using my merc tank, I just put an omc fuel fitting on the fuel line. Why no grey fuel line?
Also what's a link and sync?

This is really important to try before you start tearing into the carb! These old beauties run off the LOW speed jet until about 75% throttle movement. If yours is idling well, that's a good indication.

To each his own, but I am a big believer in doing things correct the first time. Hate doing the same job over again, especially because I cut corners. I would do a thorough clean and rebuild with a kit to be sure the carb will not be an issue.

Good advice really, but I've loaned motors out and I've had my kids use them and they didn't always come back perfect.

Simple procedure works quite often really.

I find those carbs very easy to work on.

Merc tank doesn't matter as long as it's a good clean tank. Gray fuel line separated on the inside causing havoc.

Linc and sync is how the carb and timer plate work together. With the motor off, slip it in gear, turn it to full throttle and take a picture of inside the carb.

I am a picky old fart, if I loan something out, I expect it to come back like you got it, if it doesn't you won't borrow from me again. For this reason, folks are happy to loan me things as they know I will take care of it and make any repairs that might be needed if I mess something up.

ok will do, I realized I was trying to rev it up in neutral and some of these motors have a lockout. Being 1986 it probably does?

Not a good thing to rev up in neutral no matter what brand of motor !! Being an older motor, hopefully your looking for a factory service manual ?

by revving it up I didn't mean trying to pin it, all of my old motors always liked a little rev up to clear them out before going into gear. I still have my 1986 Mariner (original owner) and I've been doing that for years. I am going to look for a manual for it. I'll put it into gear and see if the throttle opens all of the way up. I think she's a solid runner as she sits which still blows me away.
