got the motor to idle and runs pretty good. but thee seems to be no top end. doesn't wind up like the 9.9 i also have. plugs are properly gapped. any ideas?

thanks
Sounds like it's time for a good tune up, eh? It sounds like it may be running on one cylinder. Start by checking spark, compression, then move on from there to the carb, if necessary.
Actually, I had a wind-up outboard when I was a kid. It came with a little metal boat. You'd wind up the outboard, then it would run around the bathtub for awhile.

Musta been where I got my attachment to boats.
just had a carb kit put in it last summer and compression check. never really got to run it after that.
didn't run when i bought it so don't know what it should run like. and the former owner is deceased. runs good and idles down to a purr but just seams to lack the rpm at full throttle.
Check the spark. Try running it open throttle on the water and use a WELL-INSULATED pair of pliers to pull one plug at a time. If one plug wire off doesn't change how it runs, you've narrowed it down.

Your 6 hp should run up to about the same RPMs as your 9.9. Something ain't right with it if it doesn't.

It's a two-cylinder motor, just like the 9.9, so it'll sound about the same at the proper RPMs.

When did you put new plugs in it last?
