Hey, I looked at your video. You and I are very close. I fish there all the time. My brother in law owns Best Deals auto in Brewster and the one in Omak as well. I love it over there! Hope to see your boat out on the water this Spring when I hopefully get mine completed:)

I edited my post Lokonn. It's actually 1 5/16th. Ideas?

What kind of sealer/coating did the transom plywood have on it when you pulled it?

I'd bet none. W/out a sealer, I'd suspect it was swollen, maybe more then a 1/16".

If I'm correct, use 3/4" ACX & 1/2" ACX. After a couple coats of epoxy on both sides, it'll likely be VERY close to the correct thickness. I used 3/4" ACX & 1/2" MDO, and 2 coats of epoxy. Fit perfect as a replacement for 1 1/4" transom.

Depending on your rebuild plan, a sheet of 1/2" & 3/4" MDO could make your transom 1st, then have a good bit left over to build out the interior. If you order MDO, get single sided, good 1 face. IMHO you don't need to get the 2 good face MDO. It's quite a bit more expensive then the single sided.

Lots of work done there jb, my suggestion is to measure the bracket the transom came out of rather than the wood. I recently had a head scratcher when measuring the wood and when I measured the bracket it was clear what thickness of wood I needed.

I have to shake my head at the boat manufacturers putting wood into their boats that have no or little protection. I guess the main concern is out the door with less cost.

Thanks All! You guys continue to be a great resource! I'm having a lot of fun on this rebuild. Going to slow down a bit over the next few weeks though (wife is noticing how much time I'm in the garage) lol! The carpet has arrived so I'll be taking the various pieces I've cleaned the glue off of and carpeting those.

The Admiral always notices the time spent in the garage, time spent online doing 'research', and will always have a better handle on the money spent then we ever will, despite our best efforts to prevent it...........

I bring my admiral into the process when I can, it keeps her from feeling left out of the process and gives her something to be proud of too when it's done.

I too try to include the boss and she enjoys the time we get to spend together and she is actually very handy and knowlegeable. Also one of the few woman I know that can sweat copper pipe.

Re: 1984 Tracker Tournament V17 restoration

Well, it's been a productive week. I got all the aluminum pieces wrapped in new marine carpet (20 oz bass boat central). Turned out really nice! I ordered rot doctor epoxy and will be doing the transom piece this weekend. I'm using only marine grade ply on everything. I also ordered a new console from Boat Parts & Accessories, Marine Boat Parts, Boat Accessories | Great Lakes Skipper. It's a lund console that's the perfect size for my rebuild. I'm super excited at how well this build is going! I will post more pics this weekend. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate all the feedback and help I've found on this site!

That's some very rugged looking carpet, are you using an adhesive too? Steady forward progress is the name of the game when rebuilding boats.

Re: 1984 Tracker Tournament V17 restoration

Okay, question guys. I'm using aircraft stripper for the paint, but am also doing some angle grinding to remove what's leftover. I'm also hand sanding the top of the inside rails because they are yellow and I want them to be black. My question...do I have to worry about lead dust? I'm doing this in my garage and my daughters are always playing out there and don't want to do anything that could harm them. Is there lead in 1984 boat paint? Thanks for the advice...I know I don't have to remove the paint, but I want to. This boat is going to be solid when I'm done with it.

I thought lead was out of paint in the 70's? I'm sure you could pick up a lead teast kit at HD, Meanards or Lowes.

Yep, no worries about Lead in that paint, but NO paint dust is good to breathe. I'd have a box fan or two with a furnace filter stuck to the back of it sitting in my garage door to try to vent and filter as much as I could

Re: 1984 Tracker Tournament V17 restoration

A lot of progress today. Picked up the marine grade ply..expensive!!!! :mad-new: but I know what I'm getting...a solid boat that isn't going to rot out on me. Piece of mind is priceless. Once the glue dries, I'll do a dry fit and then start the epoxy process with Dr. Rot (out of Seattle). The only hatch I can't find a replacement for is the battery/gas/etc. so I used some of the 3/4 to make a hatch. I'm going to attach a 1/8 piece of sheet metal to the top of it and then carpet it and attach with a marine piano hinge.

My buddy works at an industrial and metal supply/fab shop and I'm going to take the trailer down next week to get sand blasted, primed and painted for only $350! Can't pass that up. :)

Another great weekend...got the front deck, bow and transom all drilled and coated. Going to do one more coat of the Dr. Rot Epoxy sealer then wrap em' in carpet and install.

Looking good! It's nice working with marine grade ply, that stuff is so solid. I just made sure to have new/correct blades when I cut it so as to not make a jagged mess on the cuts.

Got the back deck carpeted today and turned out really good! Also got all the wiring pulled through to the bow. Slow, but steady. Next I'm going to finish off the floor (hopefully the last piece of marine ply I'll need!$$$). Then it's on to the console.:joyous:
