1984 bayliner restoration.

Hello, Im a new member, and first i I would like to say hi and thank you for letting me use your forums!

My brother just gave me a 1984 bayliner the hull and what not is still intact etc. But the engine will not work, he said he took it out on the lake and he thinks it jumped time so I asked if I could have it just to have it (it was free what can I say?) Also the interior is all scratched and cracked, Also some of the wood probably needs to be replaced and carpet its a full restoration probably not worth the money but im only 19 and my dad is gonna be helping me and I want it to be something I did. Any suggestions where I can get parts and learn how to put the carpet on etc?

Welcome aboard.

In your own interest.......... establish the motor and outdrive first. The early bayliners had POOR construction and will suck allot of money from your wallet.

I have NEVER heard of a marine engine jumping time..........

hi shawn.....welcome to iboats !

working on boats is a hard dirty ugly messy job.......but most of us here think that it is well worth it, and some of us idiots even think its fun !

you need to know several things before you tear into this...

first off, unless the boat has sentimental value, or is a very specific type of boat....if you have to do a full gut restoration (im guessing that you will have to), and change the motor.....you will have spent more money repairing the boat than it will ever be worth.

motors can cost 5 thousand dollars....
the restoration it self of just the hull can cost any where from 800 to 3000.
i already know that your boat will be far more towards the 3000 for the hull alone.

there are many many bayliners being built on this forum right now.....
we can and will guide you to a successful restoration if you wish to do this....

do a little reading here.......and post pictures of your boat.

the hull and stuff is still fine everything is good, the only thing Im worried about is the motor, It wont start every time you try to start it, it just doesnt do the full start it just doesnt crank at, also if i can get the motor started all that leaves is the interior seats are cracked but everything is fine. Ill post picks soon.

That boat probably has a AQ125, Look down by the starter boss, should be an ID tag there.

That engine is not an interference engine so, no bent valves if the belt did slip time.

You say it does NOT start every time, then you say it doesn't crank.



Describing a no start condition is easier if we use the same language. Such as, it cranks but doesn't run. Once you figure out what you have post your questions on the appropirate engine forum. You will get all the answers you need.

Listen to oops about Bayliner build quality, they are a built for the masses boat, and if the seats are that rough I would bet there is some hidden rot in that boat.
