1984 35 johnson

I need to know how to get the gearshift rod loose so I can get the foot off on a 1984 35 johnson outboard motor. Help!

Did you have it in forward gear?

I do know that the connector is behind the water intake screens on the side of the gearcase, but don't remember the exact details of how it comes apart without looking at it to refresh my memory. I suppose that must be a reminder that it is time to replace my water pump??

Thanks for that bit of info, I'll try that in the morning and let cha know if it works. After i get the screens does it need to be in forward gear to get to the screw? Yeah probably huh? I'll try that .Thanks

Pull the screens off. Unscrew the 2 nuts from each other. Slide the top nut up and remove the nylon collar.
