Greetings, this is my first personally owned boat. I used to operate a 22 ft Almar jet boat for several years and I miss the water so badly I had to get a boat of my own. My buddy, you know him as Watermann, said I had to start a thread and share my project with everyone. So this may take a very long time to finish, but here it goes. I purchased this boat March 13th in Cashmere WA, after several miserable craig's list failures. It's a 19.5ft Bayliner Cuddy with a Volvo Penta 4cyl and VP outdrive.

Welcome to drydock Yarney!

What do you plan on doing that Capri?...Rebuild, or get her going?...Cant go wrong with the Volvo setup, imo.

Yeah, it figures Waterman sent you here, though he's dressed as the tin man, he has a secret fetish with glass boats :D

Thank you guys. Yes Waterman is a devoted tin man and it kills him that I bought a glasser, but he bought the only $600 tin boat in the Pacific Northwest. I just wanted a Cuddy to do some family cruising and a little fan tail fishing with my boy. I plan to replace the decking, build new seat peds, new seats, overhaul the engine and spit shine the old girl. Im into her for $500. 96 trailer which needs a couple spots of rust cleaned up.

The biggest problem with the motor and outdrive at the moment is that the drive shaft is frozen in the engine and the PO cut the U joints with a torch to remove the outdrive.

Just a little update on a little progress.. Removed the seat boxes and foam. surprisingly after watching several other threads the deck under the foam was not rotten. the bulkhead boards into the cuddy were. Overall the foam was very dry.

:welcome: to the iboats drydock!

Yeah I do love the tin but the thought of being itchy does make me twitchy.

Yarney didn't like my idea on how to get that stuck driveshaft out of it's den. I told him to throw a chain on the shaft, hook it to a tree and drive off. He seemed to think that might rip the whole motor out the back end.

You may have to find some VP guys in that section who could shed some light on an alternate more glass friendly way to remove that shaft from the ole gals bum.

One thing that surprised me is the boat seems to only have structural foam and the only wood is the decking, seat boxes, dog house and cabin bulkheads. That would make for a real easy deck rebuild not having a bunch of rotten stringers.

As for youre ujoint, it splines in the flywheel cover with 2 bearings on a primary drive shaft....if they aren't completely seized, when you put the engine on the hook, and disconnect the mounts, it will usually free itself. U can use a block of wood against the lip of the flywheel cover, and a crow bar to pry it out, the bearings and shaft will stay with the cover.....its usually best to remove the engine with the flywheel cover attached.

Its just a standard Borg Warner coupler, connecting the ujoint to the PDS...so straight out force will separate them, like a chain and a tree :D

Welcome to the drydock. Good size project you got there and I see you did not waste any time procrastinating. Stop by Home Depot and buy couple cans of these

spray generously on the stuck parts and let it work overnight. It will help great deal with whatever method you will use to get it out. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for the comments guys! I was beginning to wonder if anyone was watching. At the moment the boat is parked on an incline stern down, which makes it difficult to get the penetrating oil to flow inboard down the shaft. After the family and I get back from a two week visit to Australia, I will be putting some serious time into the deck tear down and engine issue. Glad I don't have to go through WOG day again on this trip south of the equator :)

So after chatting with Watermann today, I decided to grab some McD's on my way home and get the chowing out of the way so I could do a little exploratory deck surgery right when I got home. Yuck!

The pry bar delamination method worked well until I got to the forward bulkhead where the glass was really thick.

A little more deck removal and then foam removal until it got dark.

The bulkhead forward of the fuel tank is toast. and the fuel tank is plumb full of something, it was sitting for a long time in the bone yard before I got it so I don't know for sure that it's fuel but if it is, it's from 2009. :fatigue:
