Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (PICS UPDATED DAILY)

Today I installed the water pump and new carburetor. Started her up and she purred like a kitten!! When I turned off the engine gas came out the carb accelerator pump shaft hole and onto the manifold. Even thought it's a new carb I guess I'm going to have to go in and adjust the float level. Do they make a fuel cut off solenoid? Now the saga go on and on! The alternator was charging but was frozen in the bracket and unadjustable. I removed the whole starter w/bracket and the bearings are fried! Just decided to get new 105 amp alternator, ($84 shipped), cause it looked in such sad rusted shape. When I bought the boat I figured I'd have to spend about $1500-$2500 to get it up and going. So actually I'm not too disappointed with cost of project, just all the lies the seller had told me about how mechanicaly good shape the boat was in!

Tilt/Trim sloenoid problem resolved. Thanks Don! Auto solenoids get their grounds from their mounts. Took grounds off "I" terminal and it works just fine. The "I" terminals are not used when useing automotive solenoids. Ron

Started tackling the eletrical today. Got to find some reasonably priced DPDT switches. Got the engne exhaust fan going and my son started buffing out the hull. Just when I thought I was making some real headway I found a crack in the lower. Acris says that it is a cavity in the foot that is breaking out from trash and can be fixed.

Thanks once again "achris" for your advice and input to my problems. Today was busy day with the lower problem and now it's at the welding shop. Repairing crack and putting new skeg on for $135. Did'nt do much except work on getting the lower off and to the shop.

Wow! In at noon and out at 6pm. I like that kind of service! I'll be sealing and painting it tomorrow. Ron

It was chipped, back corner broken off and only half the size in length of the new one. Decided to get it done to protect the prop ($90). Ron

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED 9/16/08)

The skeg is already made and they just cut off the bad portion and weld on and shape the new one so it looks like factory original skeg but longer. Are you sure your vibration is being caused by that? Is yours I/O or outboard and # cylinders and HP? What about your thrust washer on the shaft for end play when your first accelerate? Ron

A a "novice" boater/repairman please don't take me tooooo seriously cause I'm just learning about boat engines myself. There is a lot of talent on this web site and they have helped me so many times. I read my repair manual and try to ask the right questions. Ron

Gotta say I am very impressed by what you have done on this project in such a short amount of time!

Glad you took my advice to come over............

I look forward to seeing more and might do some of the same.

I initially had engine problems.........did some restoration..........replaced teak with starboard, painted cockpit, installed pulpit/windlass, etc.........

Not very much got done yesterday. Only got the lower primered with Red Oxide paint and started working on rebuilding the front gas tank cover. Spent lot of time getting an understanding of how my I/O lubrication works and how to service it. Hope my new switches arrive today so that I can start rewireing the switch panel tomorrow. Only 4 days left on my "3-Week Project." Here's couple of pics. Ron

I bought indoor/outdoor carpet at Home Depot for .43 cents square foot. Used 3M spray adhesive, the heavy duty one $12, to attach to fiberglass and woodwork. The lower area is what they use to make new shower stall walls. I don't know what they call it but had to buy 4x8 sheet for $27.00 and used tin snips to cut it. Seems to work out really well. Don't forget to use caulk adhesive at the bottom. Ron

PROJECT DAY #19 Feel like I'm moving at a snails pace now. Only got the lower foot painted and installed the new impellar. The temp was 95 degrees today, which isn't bad, it's the humidity that gets to me. Recieved the alternator and will install it and the lower foot tomorrow. Hope my new switches come tomorrow from Radio Shack to start making the new switch panel. 8 switches, 8 lights and 8 fuse holders. Ron
