Thanks Jim, it's going to be hot this weekend so I'll give it a shot. CC, where did you find the keen strip? I may have to hunt for that. Thanks for the heads up on not drilling the hole through the weld Watermann, I definately would have done that. I probably won't build it up though since I'm not going to paint the bottom.

I would advise not to do the aresol version of kleen strip. I got 3 cans and they all gumbed up on me and were useless. If you get the jug you can brush on though that stuff worked the best for me! Id scrape it then use the 3M paint stripper pad on the drill for the remainder. Worked out really well for me. But if you do that becareful aaround the rivets. The best for that area is the nylon cup on the drill!

Well, stripping went pretty good today. I went with a stripper called Super Remover and it worked really well. It got most of the paint off on the first application with a little scraping and wire brushing. It doesn't seem to take off the primer though, the stuff just doesn't want to come off. Acetone seemed to take it off but it took a good dousing and a lot of scrubbing. Any other ideas for getting the primer off? I think it's the first coat of self etching primer that is being stubborn. I'll post up some pics tomorrow after I clean it off.

Here she is stripped but you can see the primer still on it. The stripper won't remove it. Any ideas?
Hope the picture works, first attempt from my phone.

Hi Candutch. You may find that modifying your air chisel tool to be a challenge. It also costs you the original tool. Aircraft Spruce Canada has rivet tips that fit standard air chisels and they have the solid rivets if you don't have them yet. That's the tool I used for a cost of about $10. - Grandad

As promised, here are the stripping pics. Not much else to show since this is all that I have done over the past week. The first one is with the stripper I found and shows how much it took off after one application. The second pic is after pressure washing and spot treating. You can see the stubborn primer in the pics. I tried a few methods of removing it yesterday, orbital sander, scotch pads, scotch pads on the orbital sander. Needless to say it's not going well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Rob

Can you get the Kleanstrip with the orange label there? That stuff you're using looks like it's leaving quite a mess. :blue:

I haven't seen it anywhere but that doesn't mean it's not available. The stuff I used got all of the paint off but that primer just wont come off clean with any of the strippers I've tried.

I had good luck with a scotch bride pad and acetone to deal with the primer that the stripper didn't get. I put some in an old spray bottle and just went to it scrubbing away. You can get scotch brite/scour pads with handles from dollarama. They worked good for me.

Thanks Rob. I did a small area with a green scotch pad and just splashed the acetone on, it worked but evaporated so fast. I will give it a shot with the spray bottle. I was hoping there was something that didn't evaporate so fast but it looks like this is really my only option. Any idea on how much acetone I will need? I'm thinking a lot.

Just thinking, I may try my polisher with the hook and loop pad with the scotch pad stuck to it as well as the acetone spray. That should hopefully work.

Well my last idea was an epic fail. Didn't touch the primer. So like any good "do it yourselfer" I decided to start trying different crap I had already in the hangar. Goof off was a fail, paint stripper was alright but required a lot of scrubbing but the overall winner by a mile was carb cleaner. That stuff is amazing! I sprayed it on and let it sit for a minute then the primer scrubbed right off with a scotch pad. I followed it up with a rag dampened in carb cleaner as well. It only took 10 minutes to do the front of the boat back to the keel strip. I'm gonna have to follow it up with a complete wiped own with acetone though because the carb cleaner is oily but that keeps it from evaporating too quickly.

Here's a pic that shows how well the carb cleaner works. I'll have to wait until I get a respirator to continue though cause that stuff is brutal on the nostrils.
