Thanks all for the kind words.

The only problem with restoring a boat is that all you think about while doing it is the boat and when it is done all you think about is getting out on it. 4 more days of work and 5 sleeps and I'll be out on it again😉

Same here and it's twice as bad when you have 2 boats

Great pics Rob, the side by sides really show the transformation, which is truly amazing. Glad to see you enjoying on the water.

I do a lot of pike. About 7 years ago, I finally learned how to take out the y bones when filleting them. There are some decent you tube videos showing variations on the process. They smoke up very nice. Marinated and charcoal grilled is the house preference.

Thanks Terry, these northern pike minnow are quite different from pike. They are actually in the minnow family. They use to be called squaw fish but changed the name for obvious reasons. They got the pike moniker because of how boney they are and the y bones. They smoked up nice but the entire thing was filled with tiny little y bones. The only way I see to make it edible is to smoke and can it and turn them into mush.

The upper Columbia river/ Lk Roosevelt has been infested with Northern pike and nobody want's them in our salmon spawning rivers below Chief Joseph Dam, the Indian tribe here has offered a bounty on them too.

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2017/apr/15/field-reports-10-bounty-offered-for-roosevelt-pike/

I saw that, some guy made 40 grand on the bounty program I read. They are native to these waters though so not sure how I feel about the bounty. It's kind of like pacific ocean salmon fisherman cursing and killing mackerel. I grew up on the east coast and we ate them there.

Perhaps I will have to think about coming west next year if this keeps expanding. The bounty in the article looks like it maxed at $10,000 total, but there may be more than one program. Getting paid to hunt pike would be up my alley.

Hello Candutch,

I am new here, and have been reading through your build over the last two months. Excellent finished product BTW. I hope my boat will look half as good as that when I am done with her.

I recently purchased a 1974 Starcraft SS16, also in need of TLC. I was looking forward to using your post as a reference when I start the restoration of my boat. Unfortunately Photo Bucket has stripped most of the photos from your blog, as well as others. Really poor timing on their part.

One of the things I was keen on seeing was how you dealt with the knee brace on the transom. The original owner of my boat let the transom go to far, and both the splash well and the knee brace on the bottom are cracked. Naturally I want to fix those issues properly.

Is there any way you could re-post the images of the knee brace?

Cheers

FIGMO

Start a topic on your boat and rebuild, w pix not hosted by Photobucket

If you ask there about knee braces, w pix of your busted braces, you should get plenty of help.

Man has time ever flown by. It seems like just yesterday I splashed the boat and now the snow is on the ground and I've filled all my hunting tags and am getting ready to process my deer and elk.
I just want to give you all a quick update on how things went with the boat this summer. She ran great and I didn't have any serious issues. I had to replace the fuel gauge sender in the tank as it was bad and my alarm doesn't seem to work for the overheat or low/no oil, I will have to figure that out next year. The bedliner held up fantastic on the trailer, not a chip in it and I pulled that boat over 100 miles of gravel logging roads. Unfortunately all the banging around on those roads probably loosened some rivets as the bilge no longer stays dry. The bilge pump spits out about a cup of water very 30 minutes once it starts. The rocker guard I sprayed on the inside of the hull up front and on the front console panels has also held up great, no chipping or peeling. I guess there is something to be said for proper paint prep. The paint on the outside has its share of chips from the gravel roads but that will be easy enough to touch up if it really bothers me.

This winter I plan on hooking up the LED lights that I installed under the gunnels and in the storage compartments and once the weather is better I will take the boat and get the side curtains and top cut and fit properly. For now she is tucked away out of the elements in the hangar.

Thanks again to everyone on here for your great ideas and help solving problems, i could never have completed this project without everyone's help.

The picture is from her last day out on the water, can't wait to get her out next year.

Beautiful boat Candutch. What an amazing transformation. Too bad the build pics have been eaten by PB. I know I commented back then, but I really like what you did with the SW.
