Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Rats, I can't make any more foam comments here. Oh well. LOL Back to regular programming and to SN related talk.

Jas - How's the hand doing since you executively de-splinted? From the vid postings it looked like you were doing a lot with the splint still in place. And one final - Did you grab that TnT?

One more - Looking at the under floor structure (foam excepted), that baby is built like a tank. It looks like the under deck of a newer SC Super Fisherman. She is strong!

Nah man, you can go talk trash on the other thread;)

Hand feels great actually! I don't have full range of motion and the pinky is a bit week but I expect that will improve in time.

Yup, T&T full bracket is on the way, I got a super deal on it:cool:

Yah, I love the stringer structure in this Sea Nymph. Should make for a very solid deck/hull:)

Rock on guys:D

Right next door to the Secretary of State is a Harbor Freight. I stopped in for a 10 pack of metal cut off wheels as I wasted my last one the last time I ran the grinder:eek::facepalm:

I may have winced just a little as I was reaching for them on the shelf there.

Cause that makes it your boat, that's why.

On the cut-off disks, either a man of courage  or a glutton for punishment. Be careful.

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Hi fellas!

Well I got the boat off the trailer yesterday. Normally I should be able to just push a boat of this size off by hand. No go here. The thing was so stinkin heavy I had to lash the Sea Nymph to a tree and pull the trailer out from under neath it.

Here's the original trailer sitting next to the Arrow Craft donor trailer...

I'm trying to consolidate some stuff around the property. My giant 6' x 16' trailer sold and I'm about to sell my little 4' x 8' trailer. So, the SN original trailer is now headed to school and will be rebuilt as a utility trailer, probably be a 5' x 11' roughly. It's super heavy duty, square tubing, massive leaf springs. Should be easy. Just bump the running gear forward, weld in 5 angle iron cross members, deck, cut the tongue off, yadayada, all good.

The Yacht Club trailer should be a quick and easy refit for the Sea Nymph.

Here's some great news! The tires and bearings are newish and in great shape on both of those trailers!!! WOOOHOO!!! Seems like the first thing I am always doing is buying 3 new tires and bearing jobs for trailers, big money saved right there!!

Then I got after the foam...

Grand total so far (with what was thrown out on Tuesday) is about 12 contractor bags and 3 trash cans worth of mind boggling heavy foam.

I'm very thankful that this boat had huge bunk boards to sit on. Had it been on a roller trailer the weight may have very well damaged this hull. Those trash bags up there ^^^ I had to grunt to get them lifted up and out of the boat.

You can see I've peeled out just about all the big chunks...

I used that small spade with the long handle for most of what I've done so far, worked pretty good. From here I'll need to get in with a pry bar/screw driver for all the little stuff in the corners and such.

We were talking about limber holes on the boat a little bit ago...

I'm pretty sure there are limber holes in the ribs there. However, they are much smaller than what we are used to in our Starcraft rigs. And, well, they are full of foam so really didn't matter they were there. It's going to be a bit of a pain to clear em out to provide positive drainage.

I've been selling random boat gear like crazy over the past few days too. The initial investment on the Sea Nymph has been covered. Another few items moved out for cash and I'll be able to consider the Arrow Craft/Trailer/Evinrude 90 a freebee as well:D

It's got to be kind of a relief to get all the squishy foam on the side of the raod. Nice progress , especially considering your doing this single handed. Literally.
Clearing the limber holes sounds like a pain. How does the foam react to over the counter chems like xylene? I'm thinking pour something in the top of the ribs and let it dissolve the foam and collect it with a rag as it flows out the holes. Kinda out of the box thinking but if it works it may make the job easier than poking at it with a small metal rod and shop vac for hours on end.

I'd suggest a 2" wide wood chisel for scraping, but since J can't be trusted to work safely with sharp/dangerous tools I won't mention it.

I cleared my limber holes out with a screwdriver, then with a pressure washer.

My foam came out in big chunks - there was actually a very thin plastic film between the foam and the hull, it was not really stuck at all. It almost made it look like the hull was wet or damp when they poured it in originally.

I find a hack saw blade the best tool for opening up the limber holes, just make sure you wear a glove so you don't open up ypur hand!!

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Michael - That's great thinking there - trying to dissolve that foam in the limbers with some chemicals. We'll see what I can do going that route. Good call, didn't even cross my mind;)

Fellas - Yah, that foam put up a fair fight, just kind of a pain. Some came out in small chunks. Some came out in really big chunks which was nice. Either way I was missing the "pick it up, throw it out" method used on our ol' Starcrafts. Yah, some smaller tools in the tight spots and grunt work, she'll get clean:)

Hey, have an excellent weekend!!!!:D

By the way, if you you were smart....

Ahem, if I was smart I should say....

I'd honor my wife and my mother this weekend rather than wrenching on boats:eek::D

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

The rotary blast head for the pressure washer worked like a dream on the small left over bits of foam when I was starting the bedliner cleanout operation. In some areas pressure washer also got the bedliner out from inside the limber holes.... But it was a 3500psi washer, and based on others observations, it could quickly do damage to an aluminum hull. Not yet, put maybe the rotary head lowered the final output psi...

Heck of a job getting to this point w/ a hand & a half..... And congrats on rebuilding the boat fixing account w/ some unwanted boat gear...

Jas - Good luck finding something to dissolve the foam. Once the foam is cured (after 32 years I think it is) the stuff is supposed to be untouchable with any solvent. You prob plenty of candidates laying around to try, but don't hold your breathe. Sounds like the old-fashioned way - chip, scrape and pressure wash.
