WOG, Thanks for the link. I have read through FRISCOBOATERS SeaRay rebuild. ALOT of good info. I wasn't aware he had some youtube videos as well. I will probably refer back to that video several times. I will be deciding on whether to cut or not in the next couple of days.

Evening All, Well my decision on whether to cut or not cut the cap has been decided for me. I had a car in my shop that was for sale. A guy that had looked at it a couple of months ago but didn't have the money called me up and said he had the money and wanted to come get it. Its gone now so I am rearranging my shop so the cap will fit in there so I shouldn't have to cut it. I hope to get the shop ready tomorrow and get back to the boat Sunday, hopefully.

Hello Everyone, Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I have had several "things" that needed to be done including re-arranging the shop. These done and Thanksgiving over I hope to get started building some sawhorses for the cap tonight. I hope to have the cap off by the end of the day Friday.

OK I have a question for everyone. I have seen on a couple of threads here showing people using small rollers (4" - 6") to roll out resin on larger areas (transoms, decks, etc.). I have found the roller frames at the local box store but the only rollers are for paint. What type roller would be the best to use on polyester resin?

Non foam, & CHEAP. They are 1 use only.

BUT, not everyone prefers a paint type roller, choosing the 'typical' bubble buster type rollers. Others don't find the bubble buster rollers to be effective and HATE trying to us them.

I'd suggest you get a bubble roller or 2, some paint style rollers and some 2" chip brushes (bristles cut down to half) then decide which works best for you. Maybe a combination of 2 for large flat surfaces, and all 3 on smaller areas & contours.........

JB, what do you mean by "the 'typical' bubble buster type rollers"?

They are metal or plastic finned rollers used to ensure proper wet out of resin & to spread the resin out evenly.

Some have fins:

Some have nubs:

And some are smooth, and some are odd shaped to allow easier use in & around corners & contours:

Well alrighty then. It's been a while since I have had a chance to do anything but this past weekend I was able to get the cap off and put in my shop. I can now remove the remainder of the deck and get started on the transom. Pics below show the separation. I was amazed at how big the hull looks without the cap on it.

In this pic you can see the floatation foam that was under the bow portion of the cap. None of it is wet so I will probably leave it in place. I would like to seal it though. What would be the best way to seal it?

This is the transom. The dark area in the middle didn't have any resin on it at all.

Hey guys, what is the best method to seal the flotation foam in the bow area? It hasn't been wet but I would like to seal it while it is accessable.

Re: 1980 17' Magnum 171 Rebuild

Thanks WOG. That's how I'll do it then.

I worked on the transom a little bit the past couple of nights. After getting the inner skin half-%^* patch job off the wood I found that the wood was soaked and rotting but it still held together some.

I found that it was made from 3 pieces of 1/2" plywood.

There was a layer of resin and CSM in between each piece and none of it was sealed. You could see along the top edge that the resin & CSM were applied after each piece of plywood was put in place. I was able to separate them and pull them out. The inner piece was in bad shape and broke up while I was getting it out.

The middle piece was in better shape but still came apart all along the bottom.

The third piece (next to the outer skin) was in good enough shape that I could take it out whole. It will work just fine for my template.

This pic is the inside of the outer skin.

That should work great as a template, and the remaining glass transom will clean up good....

OK. I need to replace about a 24" portion of the wood strips (not sure what they are called) that the screws for the cap go into.

I suppose I will have to cut them, uh? I've never seen them anywhere.

Several resto's replace the entire wood strip around the entire top edge of the hull.

GT1M did a pretty good job documenting his prep of the hull, making & prepping the wood strips then installing them.

Yep, cut em out and glass em back in.

I was already thinking about glassing them in. The manufacturer used rivets to hold them in place but the rivets don't go all the way through the wood. I pulled the strip loose in a couple of places close to the transom and the rivets go about half way through the wood.

WOG, I assume I should probably take them completely off and seal them with resin and glue them to the hull just like the you would the first piece of plywood on the transom. Correct?

Yes, remove them from the hull

Then apply resin, allow it to tack up, apply more resin, wrap them w/ CSM, wet out the CSM, and allow it to cure.

Use PB or PL to adhere them to the hull, be careful not to distort the hull....

Re: 1980 17' Magnum 171 Rebuild

Evening. Thought I would show everyone a side problem to a rotting transom. These are the eyes on the transom that I used to strap down the boat. The exposed part still looked pretty good but the shanks were already thinning and probably close to failing.
