Thats a trolling plate so you can fish with the Big motor, it has to be raised up for going fast and down as it shows for trolling.

What did you have the tape on the bow and keel for when you primered the outside of the boat?

Damnd if I know I never used one I assume it had a wire control to it to lift it. Take it off as you will go nowhere with it on . It has no function on the motor except higher RPN at slower speeds. It looks like it is hitting the Prop??? I always thought it wolud put a load on the Main Motor.

I might be wrong, but I don't think you have to do anything with the plate. I believe the thrust from the prop will force the plate to lift when you start throttling up so you don't have to physically lift the plate. Then when you throttle down the plate drops back to the trolling position.

That makes sense to me I have not used one and I can see how that would work. Personally I would remove it and put a small kicker on it. I learned something today thanks However that might just make backing the boat up near impossible as the plate will not allow water to pass in the reverse mode.

Paint job is looking good!

Google "Happy troller" to find out more info about that plate on your motor.

Re: 1979 Starcraft Holiday16 closed bow

interesting trivia bit on plywod if you can't find marine in your area: most Home Despots etc have birch plywood....i was curious about whether it used waterproof glue so i soaked a scrap in a container of water for a week, with a few drops of deterg added for wetting agent....

result, zero delamination altho after a week the wood fibers themselves were looking a bit sad. so i used this stuff at length in raising the gunwales on my 16' [Evil Other Brand] lumie after i laid on several coats of epoxy resin thinned with xylene.
