Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS ALMOST SPLASH TIME

I'm not out of the woods yet, it takes a long time to get parts delivered up here. I ordered parts for my snowblower in June and got them two days ago, I was starting to worry the snow was going to be here before the parts..

Thanks again Glen

Boy, that is cutting it close. Almost had to polish the old shovel didn't you? Better place your springtime boat parts order yesterday.. The SS still looks good, will be gooder once you hit the water.

Holy crap that looks good. Showroom. Nice job!!!!!!!!!!!! Can I have lots of pictures of your bow deck setup? I'm totally stealing your 2 piece wood idea. That's definitely the way to do it for best strength. I can't see in your pics how you're accessing the storage. Hatches? or just the factory cubbies.

Hey Ez here are some photos of what was done. You have access both through the cubbies and the removable bow peice. The seating cut out is 21" front to back, I am going to make two cushions one for each side which will give me comfortable seating for one person on each side. I doubled up the 5/8"ply under the seat pedestal and added two pieces of 5/8" ply 2"s deep underneath to stiffen the ply. The one that you can see in the photo I covered with vinyl to make it blend with the deck. The origional aluminum support worked very well to support the deck.
More photos in next post.

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS ALMOST SPLASH TIME

Thanks Jason. I am mounting my fuel tank under the splash well, it is the steel Mirax one that was in the boat, but it was held down with those goofy steel brackets that go over the end lips on the tank and rust like crazy, I want to change this. The tank also used to sit right on the vinyl floor and I put two 6" wide strips the full length of the tank of wash bay matting under it, this will hold the tank up off the floor 3/4"and allow air circulation under it. My problem is how to secure it now? Brackets won't work, maybe strong bungees or a couple of 1"ratchet straps, ideas anynone.

I am damn impressed with the way you just rip into these these boats. Thanks for posting such great photo sets of what your doing.
This has been great to follow. You put so much in do you get your money back out? Tremendous work...

That is a professional looking job on that cast deck! Everything else looks great too. Got to feel great to be done in a way.

WZ - We should easily break even cash wise if we sell them. The Pride and Enjoyment involved is priceless.

Jason can you get those tight enough to hold the tank down, I have had trouble with them in the past holding atv's and such, but maybe I bought the wrong ones.

Thanks WZ and Mike, time will tell if I can get my money back out of her. I really enjoy rebuilding them so I won't be including any labor. These boats bring a real premium up here in Canada. I was looking at another 18SS 800miles east of me, very rough paint, most of the trim was missing, a none running 150 merc and no trailer $1200.00

Heck ya! I use them for everything! I have secured slick and wet kayaks/canoes to car racks and trailers/racks hauled hundreds of miles, never lost one. They are the bomb.

I like the ones made by NRS and Yakima, high quality gear right there.

Thanks for the idea Jason, worked great as you can see in the photo. Plus some bling came in the mail today so I had to install them too.

Well at least you could have color matched the tank straps, Dozer. Those belong in Lakes boat. Serious - snazzy SS, buddy.
