Lower unit must be removed.

Measurement must be made from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole.

1979 thru 1981 V/4 models = (L) 21-27/32" - - (XL) 26-27/32" Have shift rod in neutral (IN NEUTRAL).

The 1975 V4 engine does not have an adjustable shift rod, just a threaded barrel on top of the rod. Screw the barrel all the way down, then back it up just enough so that it is facing properly.
