I am curious, how did you brace your ski locker lid? Also did you install new rub rail or keep old? Do you think 1/2" floor is sturdy enough now that you have had it for awhile? Did you consider fiberglassing deck other than just paint? Thanks

Re: 1979 18? Starcraft Supersport Resurrection (warning ? lots of pics)

I know this is an old thread, but it's exactly the info I've been looking for. What a great forum this is. The work you guys have done really is fantastic! This is my first post.

I just bought (first boat) a 79 Starcraft SS. It's exactly like the yellow one posted earlier in this thread, except not in as good shape and it has a Merc. The floor is rotting, some of the upholstery is coming apart and the hull needs to be repainted. Other than that, the motor runs great, power trim, steering and boat handles well. I bet we've burned 10 tanks of gas since July 30th. My family has had a lot of fun in this old boat!

I'm seriously thinking about replacing the floor and painting the hull. I have questions even after studying this thread.

I'll start with these: It appears that the sides/walls and some of the structures inside the boat are riveted in place. What is the best way to remove these? Cut the rivets, drill them out? I assume when I reassemble the interior I'll have to use screws. Can I replace the floor without removing the interior walls?
Sorry for the rookie questions. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hey Berno

Welcome Aboard

We were all rookies somewhere, someplace at sometime..it's all good.

I gotta say though..first rookie mistake is what is known as "Hijacking" a thread..What you can do is go to the home page of the Boat restoration Section and click on POST NEW THREAD/Topic..

We'd love to see pics of your SS...

Also I recommend you go to the very first page that list all thread sections..and underneath all the thread sections is a boats by manufacturer, go down to STARCRAFT and pop in there to say HELLO to!!!

Not trying to be an arse..You didnt know...

We can help, I hafta say this forum is chock full of nuts..but some very smart nuts!! lol

again
Welcome Aboard!!

On the cover, I used 2X2's (well, a ripped 2X4) and attached them lengthwise for support. Underneath, I made a square "lip" of 2X4's which were fastened to the floor. The cover sits on these 2X4's. (Does that make sense? I'll have to find some pictures.....)

I drilled mine out. You want the drill bit diameter to match the rivet's diameter (so you don't go making bigger holes when you drill them out). Pretty easy.... the drill bit centers itself on the rivet and away you go. Once the head comes off, the rest should just fall out. I must've had 100 rivet "carcasses" all over the bottom of my hull, and they try their best to find places to get stuck in.

I used rivets when I replaced everything. Screws are OK, but you'll want stainless, which is expensive. Plus, they can come loose over time. Airplanes use rivets for this reason. I bought a pneumatic rivet gun and a few hundred rivets and never looked back. It goes real quick when you get the hang of it.

From iBoats of course! http://www.iboats.com/PolyPlanar_Ra...95607977--**********.570796936--view_id.52583

I don't remember paying that much for it though. I want to say it was on sale for $29, but it's been a while. Still cheaper than replacing your stereo after that first big splash.

Glad to see you posting again Joey.

Yeah, work's real busy right now - they gotta use up the budget money before the end of the year, so all our jobs have to be closed out next month. In the spare time, I'm working on the honey-do list while the boat sits on the side of the house. (At least I got a canopy for her this year). Oh, and finally got her registered after 2 years!

Did you see what I just bought?

Nice! I jumped over to your thread and saw the first few pictures. I'll read through it tonight.

Re: 1979 18? Starcraft Supersport Resurrection (warning ? lots of pics)

Nice job on your boat, I think I will follow your lead on colors, I have a question and will quote you here:

Hull (interior):

Reinforced splashwell with some galvanized brackets. Used 40 (exactly) 1? galvanized lag bolts to secure splashwell to transom (Starcraft owners know what I?m talking about here), after drilling pilot holes and filling each with silicone.
I am not sure what you are referring to with the galvanized brackets where do these go exactly?
Thanks for the great photos and work!

Hey karhawk, from you're sig. you have an I/O Super Sport Joey's SS is an OB. Two different animals when referring to the stern on our SC's, you don't have a splash well.

Re: 1979 18? Starcraft Supersport Resurrection (warning ? lots of pics)

I gotta say that your resto has inspired me. I just picked up a 1980 160 super sport for a grand. Unfortunately I got less than i thought i did but a perfect hull none the less. I just gutted down to hull and have learned a lot from your thread. I'd like to start my own thread as I have taken pics along the way to where i am now, but don't know how. A little help anyone? By the way awesome job on your boat!!!!

Welcome to iboats colwllce! Go to the restoration section here: http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22 and click the Create New Post button. Your best bet for pictures is to upload them to a photo hosting site like photobucket.com and link to them from here. Trying to attach photos right on iboats is painful and the file size restrictions are too small.

You have stumbled upon probably the largest collection of Starcraft enthusiasts on the 'net! Make sure you check out the Starcraft-specific section here: http://forums.iboats.com/Starcraft_Boats

Deck is ?? pressure treated MCQ yellow pine plywood. MCQ is ?micronized copper quaternary? and seemed a lot dryer than the stuff I used for the transom. I used measurements to cut the panels, since the old stuff was so rotted.

Awesome job! What technique did you use for measuring the deck (to keep it square)?

I didn't even think of "squareness" when I laid it out. I really just started from the transom, and moved forward. I guess if the transom's out of square with the rest of the boat, I have bigger problems then just the floor.....

This boat is the reason that I got a SS!

I am in the process of replacing the floor in my 73' 16 footer and want to add a ski locker and like the look of yours. Did you have any close up pictures of it and how well has it been holding up? I was looking for a used one but I have only found the on flea-bay.
