QD19 / QD18 lower unit swap

I have a 1958 Johnson 10hp, a QD19, and just got a 1957 of the same model, a QD18 (both red & white but with reverse coloring). I had hoped the lower units would be the same so that I could swap them, but the '57 has an extra larger bolt holding on the lower unit. I assume this makes them not interchangable. If this is true, are the gears inside still swapable if I dissasemble both lower units and swap them out? I'd like to keep the '58 going as it's in great condition. Thx for any replies... Steve

Re: QD19 / QD18 lower unit swap

Well, I have a QD16 lower in my shop, AND a QD20. BOTH 5 bolts...insides the same. Now as I have no 17, 18, or 19 or others, I also don't know why would the 58 be different? Only one year (possibly 2 if the 19 is different too)? Far as I know, only the paint changed. Pictures really help here. .I can't figure why one year would be different? Far as I know, only the 5 and 5 1/2 were 4 bolt. I can't find any diagrams that go back that far online. We need a little more clarity here FR. Do you have any links to old parts diagrams, as this is news to me, and would like to know more on this for future reference. Thanks
PS Both those lowers are for sale, plus I have other QD parts, email me at hogrider@myway.com if I can help

Re: QD19 / QD18 lower unit swap

Sorry, Scatty, but I know for a fact that a QD-20 has a four bolt gearcase, and am quite sure QD-19 was the first year for it. I'll post a picture from the QD-20 parts book as soon as my web storage space comes back up (a-a-a-r-r-g-g-h) Are you positive yours really is a QD-20?

QD-18 and older 10hp motors used a 5 bolt gearcase which actually was borrowed from FD 15-18hp models. The Four bolt 1958-up was used right on through the 9.5hp models till the 9.9 came out.

OK, just did a second check. Jerk that brought the motors over said a 1955, and a 1959. I looked at the plate, which is hard to read, and its not a 59 QD20, its a QD17, 5 bolt. Thats what had me all screwed up there for a minute. Problem solved, info put in my brain. So it looks like they went to 4 bolt in 58. Also have a FD 11 I brought in last night. Its a 5 bolt too.
Anyway, if ya can, I'd like a pic of the 4 bolt gearcase if ya have one. I lent my manual out to a neighbor, and aint seen him in days. Still learning after all these years!

My webspace is still on the fritz, but I posted it over at Fiberglassics JEGO forum. Take a look at it there. Copy and paste without the quotation marks.

Can you tell me what year they went to the new hood, instead of the clamshell? Thanks for the link..

That 10 HP gearcase has a larger diameter drive shaft. thus a larger diameter lower pinion gear bushing. the gearcase will not interchange. You can use the 5 1/2 -7 1/2 gearcase, but must use the upper, and larger upper bushing drive shaft carrier. I mean the 4 bolt gearcase here.

I'm not sure I follow how you say I can do this as I do have the lower unit from a '59 5.5hp... As the driveshaft was smaller, I assumed all the parts were smaller and of no use to me to fix my QD19. Might they be of some use?

The aluminum flip-up hoods were last used in 1958. 1959 models had fiberglass hoods.

Thanks...I thought 58 was the last year, and how I came up with a QD20 59 that looks like what I got sitting in the shop is beyond me. I DO believe its old age kicking in, or just getting stupid again..aint the first time!

It's not a "Old age kicking in", it's "Intellectual Overload". Also, "Education is whatever you have left after you've forgotten everything you've learned"

That's my total wise sayings for the day. I'm getting old too.

Re: QD19 / QD18 lower unit swap

So other than another exact QD19 I'm outa luck for lower unit gear replacement? And I can't even move the entire propeller shaft over from the QD18?

No, everything is different. But you don't need an exact QD-19. Too many models to check one by one, but I am pretty sure any of the QD-19 and newer QDs are the same. Also a lot of parts are shared with the MQ-xx 9.5 models, 1964 and forward. The MQs do have a shorter driveshaft.

Hi Samo,
Exactly what parts do you need for your QD-19? I've got a parts unit here that someone used as a shoal-finder. Might have some odds or ends you can use...

Re: QD19 / QD18 lower unit swap

I need the 3 lower gears, pinion, forward and reverse... (yep, all toast) yours any good? Or to make it easy, the pinion gear and the prop shaft (saves taking the shaft apart)... I have some other parts to swap if you're in need of any ( I have about 20 old engines)... should we be taking this off line? steve@ovhi.ca
