Okay folks, with the help from WOG, I have everything coming for the poly supplies to get me working again. Now IF the weather will cooperate, maybe I can get this project moving along again...

Odd and equally shocking is how much shipping they charged. Seems for every 5 gallons of polyester ordered, there is a $26 dollar "Hazer Fee" on top of the normal shipping costs. And I ordered 15 gallons to start with! And that makes me really wonder. Who sets that fee and why? I know that is just in case there is a spill of any polyester during shipping. But think about this for a second. Knowing the number of 5 gallon containers shipped all across this country daily just for polyester resin not counting all the other hazer materials, how many truly have any spills what so ever? I'd bet not even 1%. But those companies charge such a hazer fee and pocket that money and we the consumer has to pay again for each order. WHY? Seems like a real pocket filling scheme. And then I understand that shipping my order to my home address was going to cost me an additional $110 dollars. But I could drive less then 15 miles and pick it up from the truck terminal and save that extra cost... Truly amazing. You can guess which way I went. The actual shipping was over 40% of the total cost until I elected to pick it up less then fifteen miles away... And so I get to only pay 20% of the total cost for shipping. I feel so much better. And for the unknowing, this wasn't just the company I was dealing with. This is from every polyester supply company! So money basically thrown away for nil... I even was going to drive to the distributor and pick it up there and save the entire shipping and hazer fees, but you can't do that. The distributor will not allow pick up. It has to be shipped... YOu would think this stuff was nitroglycerin or something. Oh the pain, the pain...

But I am now in the waiting mod and once it gets here, I hope to dive in and get this project on track again! :D

Polyester resin is a HAZARDOUS MATERIAL, I hope you asked for a copy of the MSDS (material safety data sheet) so you can work with this material safely and use the right PPE and precautions.

I have work with the polyester resins previously and know the precautions. But seems you missed the actual point. I know they deem it as a hazardous material and therefore tack on an additional $26 dollars for each 5 gal bucket ordered. And when you order multiple 5 gallon buckets, it all ships together but you pay for each bucket of it. $26 dollars quickly adds up quickly when you order 15 or more gallons... And my question is WHY? Why not one hazard fee for the entire order, or actually refund the customer when the product arrives without out any spillage? Seems somebody is pocketing such additional fees on top of the normal shipping costs. Case in point. If you order gun powder and/or primers for center fire cartridges, they tack on the hazard fee on top of the shipping fee. BUT, if you order ammo already loaded, there is zero hazard fee...go figure! And that IS just one example of such questionable situations I could site!

The companies have to have a HAZMAT license and insurance to deal in and ship material deemed hazardous, the HAZMAT shipping fees pay for the license and insurance. It doesn't matter where you buy the stuff, you'll pay for HAZMAT one way or another, either through a fee or an inflated price. $26/5 gal. is a pretty cheap HAZMAT fee, lots of places will charge $45 or more. You actually got off easy.

A little update. I nearly finished the five clamping system for the transom rebuild and was informed that yesterday the shipped all the polyester and fiberglass materials. So it should show up any time now. I'm really getting excited to get working on this project again... Weather is even starting to look better too... :bounce:

I got the polyester and fiber-glassing materials in today... :eagerness: :bounce: And of course it is raining as well. BUT, I also have the entire front steering and suspension sections out from under the Blazer rebuilding the entire front sections in my shop with new Moog replacement parts for everything. So after I get the Blazer front end rebuild now.... Always something!

Need some opinions and suggestions. I have finally received all the polyester resin and 1708, CSM, Cabisol, 1/4" chopped glass and such. Now I need some answers to how does the experienced poly folks get the resin out of the five gallon buckets and what does everybody mix their poly in? I can easily buy mixing/measuring cups from the PPG paint store and I have tons of mixing sticks (woodshop), and even saved a lot (maybe 40 or 50 of them) coffee creamer containers (about 1/2 to 3/4 gallon or larger sizes) that I can use to pour the poly into to actually do the mixing in if need be. But I don't see how to get the poly out of the buckets. I get the feeling pouring it will create a huge mess. So what does others use? :decision: :noidea:

I just use Plastic cups to dip it out into the measured quart mixing containers. I have a glass Measuring cup for the MEKP.

OR

If you're not a C.O.B like me you can go to Lowe's and for 3 bucks buy one of these...

I was wondering if there is a pump type adapter that could be installed into the top of the bucket and be used. Ever seen of anything like that? I probably can get a small glass measuring cup for the MEKP without much problem, being how little is used to the amount of poly...

USC sells the Resin Pumps that fit on gallon jugs for epoxy. I've never found the need for Poly. You don't have to be EXACTLY dead on with your measurements. Using the Metric System on the Cups and the glass MEKP container I promise you, you'll be able to get close enuf using the graduated lines on them to get the job done.

You could always make one of those fancy shmansy 5 gal pivoting bucket holder like Decker did ... Basically a wooden frame to hold the bucket with a pipe to use as an axle of sort with a handle . It pivots on the axle . Just dip it low enough to pour the resin into your cup . One hand on the handle and one on the cup ! Your lid does have a built in pour spout don't it ?

Interesting idea there sphelps, and yes, the lids do have pull up pour spouts with screw on caps (after you cut the opening). I may have to so something down that line now....thanks!

Here is a pic of Deckers ... http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...-stringer-replacement-help/page42#post6261376
I might just have to make one of those also ..

Ha thanks for looking it up. I actually did search last evening until I found it myself. But I do appreciate you doing that as well. Now others reading this can see what he made. I have been tossing ideas around in my head now to make one and I'll post my version when I get it finished as well. Thanks again! :thumb:

^^^^^Yup, that's what I use. Very handy! As for pouring out of a 5 gal bucket, I just tilt the bucket with the spout at the top and a measuring cup help up to the spout and slowly tilt the bucket. Once the resin is low enough, I lay the bucket on the workbench, spout up, and just roll the bucket with a container at the spout to pour what I need. Hope this makes sense.

I should have guessed it, I finally got everything ready to go, bought all the polyester and 1708, CSM, Cropped 1/4" filler, Cabisol, chip brushes, mixing buckets, plywood and everything needed to do the work, and now the temperatures are hanging in the mid 30's to 40's all over again... Ug! :frusty:

Okay I now have the Blazer front end completely rebuilt and realigned waiting for new tires. So I am move again to the boat. Weather isn't working in my favor yet still...maybe we get in the 40's today... So I am again looking forwards and buying things I'll know I need.

I have a question for those that have done this before. The rub rail on this boat is attached with large headed rivets (about 1/2" or l little larger heads with I think 3/16" diameter size). I have found some to replace them, but was wondering if I should use rivets again OR go with counter sunk stainless steel head machine screws with flat washers and lock nuts? I see either way working, but would like for the experts' opinions before sending an order out for them!

Also what is the part number for warm weather so I can ordering a ton of that too?
