OK Gentlemen...This morning I sat in the Islander and stared, and thought...
Then I made a decision...
I'm done talking about batt placement.

OK, Jas, Excellent decision. Now if I can just get you to recess the battery boxes into the bilge ...... - Grandad

Hey JO,
yeah, all i heard in that video was blah blah blah, where should i put batteries, can i mount them half in the bilge area or not, blah blah blah, something about a seat, really not happy wiht the battery location.................... :D

You know you could always make the doghouse into a sunpad/casting deck that is removeable as well with rod holders along the sides set at different angles.

Good decision. You could build the area above the batts into an area to hold the cushion and a tackle box. They are nice to set there while your setting up. Off to eat some salmon!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi Jason:

I have a 1976 Grew/Slickcraft. Last year I rewired the entire boat, new gauges and all. While I was doing the tear down I found NO tinned wire on board and all was well after so many years. I bought a roll of red and a roll of black tinned wire and frankly wish I hadn't as the cost was so high I would have to live to be 150 years old to get any kind of utility from the expense. Red and Black are only part of the problem as the manual calls for different "marine" colors which are all available at Harbor Freight (Canadian Princess Auto) for pennies. My opinion is that if your boat is moored all year round and heavily used in a damp marine environment then you should use the correct tinned marine wire. If you have an old boat on a trailer I simply can't see any utility at all. However, I guess it's my opinion only, eh? Remember I have a "Glasser" too!

By the way, after dismantling more than one Mercruiser wiring harness I find NO tinned wiring in them, so arguably the most important harness in the boat wasn't deemed important enough by the World's biggest marine engine manufacturer to include marine wire. Just a thought!

Good decision I think.... I know you were done talking about it but why not just put one in the rear for engine needs and the other up front where you mentioned for aux. power needs.. Prolly already mulled it over on your end just curious. Save money on the big cables for the starter and ground back to the battery and have the aux battery up front...

I like them both on back just as well myself. 6 in one hand... half dozen in the other... Just saying..

Morning Jason, amazing how all these minds work together, and then you come back to the origional design. Looks good and should be totaly trouble free.

Yah man, going in circles is pretty much my favorite hobby. Ugh, how embarrassing:redface:

BTW have you seen my red stapler?

(whoops, I just realized that's a black one, I may have screwed one of the metal boat guys)

Oh boy....

Hey JO,
yeah, all i heard in that video was blah blah blah.

Yah, that's actually what I said! Dood, you are good:D

Off to eat some salmon!

Oooo, I could take a little of that....

Green light to use regular wire...

Good decision I think.... I know you were done talking about it but why not just put one in the rear for engine needs and the other up front where you mentioned for aux. power needs

Yah, actually my power needs will be pretty minimal. The only real reason I have the deep cell going in is to help with the down riggers, which will obviously be installed at the stern.

OK, no more batt talk!

No, but I did have something called a monster burger the other day, it was awesome! Fat patty, grilled turkey and ham on it, yum! Uh, I'm in training by the way, trying to shave a few #'s:redface:

Jas, updated drawings for ya. Take a look. Cherrio:)

I'll check em out, thanks man;)

Remember you will have a radio, graph, fish hawk, lights, downriggers, blower, trim, etc... that will need long runs and then fed under the dog house. You may want an auxiliary battery by the fish box. Oh wait no more talk about that...

A busbar (powerbar) installed near the helm will accomodate most of those and then some.....

Yah, I ran a fuse panel in the Jet and it was certainly the way to go. I'll do the same here just a little bigger...

(no stereo in my boat - wind, waves, birds, and "fish on" for noise;))

K, this morning I got those cabin bulkhead pieces finished/painted up, ready for install.

I also wrestled some 4' x 8' Araco ply through the table saw for the seat box/storage. I think I'll wait till I am further along in this build process to post up photos. There will be a lot of steps with this and it won't really make a whole lot of sense till I start putting it all together.

Cheers guys:)

I said radio...ship to shore radio...the boys in orange, brown, green will all get you if you don't have one of those! :D

I should do something like that in my boat. I have a JUNGLE of wires everywhere. There are fuses and a lot of them connect up under the dash but it would take me a year to figure out where everything ran.

Now, I know that many of you have been doing a lot of :facepalm: along the way...

...while others have joined in the fun...

Guys, please accept my apologies for dragging this on unnecessarily. We are now done with that:)

Bravo, bravo!!!

So, Jas, I was just wondering... Have you given any thought to where you are going to place the batteries on this rig? :)

I know, if your hand could reach down to Mississippi, you would give me a nice back hand to the head....

Keep plugging brother; this rig is going to be sweet.

Carp, just for the record, I had nothing to do with this ^^^^

And I was in favor of front of the dog house from the beginning!:D
Thumper spoke to me in a smoke & mist filled dream months ago. Thumper was also in favor of in front of the dog house placement...
