OK, now if you'd just yank that cuddy top off we'd have exactly the same boat!

That big cabin on the front of this Islander will be sweet for the big lakes around here...

...but...

...tell ya what NB, watching your CC, and others around this place, come together has me thinking about what my NEXT project might be, hmmmmm...

JA, to say I'm impressed would be an understatement. My wife calls me " McGuyver" too, I honestly think thats a requirement to be a full fledged Tinner. I am a lot like you as I have more time than money (and NO shed) so it does no good to tell me "I can't" or that "you will need help". Keep on stroking my friend. There will come a day when we can say " I did that myself" (with help from my I Boats friends), and Brother, time with the kids is priceless. Dale

Thanks Dale! Appreciate the encouragement! And the young ones, I am totally with you. It takes me way longer to do any of this work with them right there with me - but I wouldn't have it any other way, they rock!

Cheers!

J removing that piece seems to really open things up in the old rig:)

I think when you first mentioned it I did not understand exactly what you were talking about removing. Can you even tell it's gone from the outside of the boat?

Toot that horn again in a belated B-Day wish from me...that baby sounds sweet!

Help me envision whats going on with the gunwales...are you removing the outside piece as well? or just what you've shown? is it that wide to step across getting in or is it the height? I'm so confused{lol}

My apologies fellas! I don't seem to be communicating very well here. You see, I am a bit of a hand talker and you guys can't see me flailing my hands/arms all over the place explaining things. Sorry about that!

So check it out...

One way I might be able to explain it is that this boat will be sort of a hybrid between an Islander and a Holiday (sort of). I am planning on taking the "ridge" piece off of the gunwale. The deal is this - if I sit and swing my legs in I have basically all my weight on that 1" aluminum rail, far from comfortable. Or, I always have the option of standing on the gunwale (there is plenty of room to do that) and then take the roughly 3' leap down to the deck.

Well, I'm not sure I feel like using either one of those methods for the rest of my life getting in and out of this boat. I sure don't want the wife, grandparents, and the smallest offspring to be doing it either. You know how things can get a little hairy when folks aren't accustomed to boarding a boat (grandparents and such) at the dock. You know, they sort of give a 50% commitment to getting in and the next thing you know you've got a funniest home video on your hands.

Having it flat all the way back will make things waaayyyy easier getting in and out. Personally, I think it will look cool too.

Hang on, let me go take a couple of shots...

OK, here is the gunwale...

Now here is what I am thinking...

Cut at the dotted line and remove, all the way back...

So, what I am left with is just the flat gunwale cap...

After that I'll need to do a little tin work to make it look pretty and finished, which, I think I have a plan on how to do that.

Make sense???

Cheers!

I see what you are up to now...thanks for the explanation and pics. Looks good. What you are doing is basically the same style as the current Islanders.

If you check the website or brochure(which I think you did:D) you will see the similarity:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So I didn't work a whole lot on the rig today, lots of family time though, which was great!

I did clean up the yard from my 115# black lab now that the snow is nearly gone (box full of dook)

Besides that...

I got the girl cleaned up for her date with the welder, marked up where things should land...

...made a template of what I need welded on out of some scrap ply...
P1010120.jpg

...hooked up the boat to the truck ready for the road trip tomorrow. I made the light connection and wouldn't ya know it...

...they worked! I fully expected to have to do a bunch of re-wire to get these working - man it's nice to catch a break now and then, eh!

The section of gunwale you want to remove adds stiffness to the hull.If you remove it,I would turn it upside down and have it welded back in.Basicly cut it enough to allow it to hinge under and weld.

Yup, I'll be adding a new new (probably using the aluminum that I have take off) inner gunwale as well as epoxied ply under there to stiffen er' up. Once it's all said and done it should be stronger than when it left the factory back in 76'.

Cheers!

Dropped her off to a great guy named Ricky, an hour later...

Turned out great, except there ended up being a bit of a warp from the weld job - you can sort of see it there at the very top. It should flatten out fine for me once I slide the transom board in and bolt her down. I'll start from the center and work my way out.

Here was something REALLY ironic...

So Ricky the welder, as I was describing to him what I needed done over the phone he said, in his really thick southern accent (he is from Florida)...

"So you musta had an ol OMC Stringer drive in there din ya! Yah, thems the worst drive on the planet! Shoot, I had one, completely rebuilt the whole thing, lasted 3 months and burned up! That there was the stupidest thing I'd done! You musta bought a Merc to put in there, huh?"

That was pretty stinking funny right there!

After reading that I feel a little bit better about not fixing up my OMC Stringer boat. :)

Yup, not to hyjack this thread, but yup Ezmobee it's a Stringer. Looking at that thing scares me and to think I was actually going to spend the money to fix it is even more scary!

Jasoutside, I forgot to mention this in my last post. I've been reading the whole thread and you've done a really great job so far can't wait to see the final outcome. I definatally wouldn't have thought to just use the trees around me as well! Nice work!

Yup, about a half a minute in the IO section of iboats will do that too!!!

Tell you what...

Boats are rarely, if ever, good investments. But with this Islander (not including Thumper) I have actually made money. I ended up selling the engiine and outdrive for MORE than I paid for the whole boat, didn't even put a whole lot of effort into it. And, I still have the trailer, controls, downriggers, console and other misc rigging to sell off yet. If I stopped there I'd be way ahead! Ah, but I'll keep on going!

Thanks a bunch boatguy! But, before my hats get too small for my head I must say that all I have really done so far, is tear things apart - any ol knucklehead can do that! Now starts the rebuild phase of this project and time will tell if I can do this boat justice, or, crash and burn!!!

Cheers Buddy!
