Re: 1975 Omega Restore, the project goes on.

Another small update.

Did some more work on our rod rack, in doing so we realized we needed a router table, so we made a ghetto one.

and a rough up of what it will look like.

Also started on our motor mount, and yes this WILL end up being a motor mount.

Thanks bob! We have a couple 2 or 3 more things we want to custom build haha. If it weren't for all of that we would be done. At the same time we wouldn't be unique. Kind of just learning as we go along.

It's coming along great. i love that rod rack.
I noticed that you have a huge roll of fiberglass. Where did you get that if you don't mind me asking?

Not sure where holtville is but im sure its far away from Huntington Beach / costa mesa area. We get all of our fiberglassing stuff from a place called "Crystaliner." The lost cause found it way back when we started. I think it was 130, and a 5gal of poly resin is 120 ish.

Holtville is in between San Diego and Yuma, AZ and about 25 miles north of the border from Mexicali, Mexico. It's in Imperial County. Yeah we don't have anything like that here, but we do have Mexico about 20 minutes South and resin with hardner is like 190 pesos wich amounts to like 15 dollars per gallon. I Just have never seen a roll of fiberglass so big.

Re: 1975 Omega Restore, the project goes on.

Great deal on that monster roll of fiberglass!

and BUMMER ya have a bunk steering cable/head....
your hatch should be slick once its all set in there.....
if you install carpet any thoughts about how to incorporate that and the neato hatch? and prevent leaks etc......Hope I didnt throw a monkey wrench into anything! YIKES...

or are you ending up with a hard deck no carpet?

Wow those ocean rod holders came out slick! now theyll be out of the way... real nice!

I think we are just going to bite the bullet and buy a new steering system for 170 ish. We didnt want to but after figuring the cable and new control head would cost about 115 bux why not just get a whole new one.

Re: 1975 Omega Restore, the project goes on.

Another update.

Yesterday we finished grinding down the gel coat on the front bow seat area that we cut out. sanded the entire deck and did our final layup, 2 layers of CSM and one layer of fine woven cloth which we will end up non skidding and painting.

This took all day so it may seem like we didnt do much.

the fine woven cloth was very very fine and hard to lay out on the bow section so we came up with a decent but somewhat painful idea.
We marked a center point and then rolled it between two pvc pipes like a scroll.

I can only dream of being at that stage with the hull painted and the cap back on. I wish I had those wood working skills, looks very VERY nice.

Re: 1975 Omega Restore, the project goes on.

Small update, someone wanted to see our seats, so heres a couple pics. Not bolted in yet but we needed to get a feel for the lay out while designing the engine cover.

WiseSeat.jpg

Frontseats.jpg

The rough build on our engine cover. It got stupid cold.....we could not go on any further.
Seatsetup.jpg

This is a pic of our Old rear seats next to our rough build. The seat backs will stay same with the bottom. The bases will be rebuilt with a slight touch of awesomeness.
RearSeat.jpg

Here is our rear cap braces, they used to be ugly rotten wood, we cut the wood off up near the fiberglass and it was not rotten there (only on the bottom where the deck was rotten)
The cap back there is now rock solid.

Comments and suggestions always welcome.

We are looking for an alternative to fiberglassing the engine cover. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah we are going to put marine vinyl, but as for the inside of it is there a coating instead of fiberglass that would be resistant to fuel fumes, oil and all that goodness?

Re: 1975 Omega Restore, the project goes on.

So far every boat engine cap Ive seen is different, one was carpeted inside from the factory (our glastron) well when the eng overheated the extremely flammable carpet they installed melted.....BAD IDEA

another (the sleekcraft) was just wood no paint no sealer no insulation.....seems fine after 28 years....we ended up painting the inside of that eng compartment with silver rustoleum so it looked better (the wood turned dark from age) a cheap and good way to do it.

The Newman boat we have was wood, no sealer, and insulated with some silver padded foil insulation......heat reflective. I like that idea....havent found a replacement for the heat reflective material yet tho (that stuff got tossed by the upholstery guy)

Either way the 3.0L motor doesnt get that hot......it isnt like a car engine compartment

Looking awesome, soon enough you'll be putting in the stereo!

yeah the cold snap hit here too...RAIN for the first time in like 3 years...and COLD 40 degrees out...BRRRRRRRRRRRR cold
