Hey guys! I'm new to the site so I can't post pictures as of now. This is my first attempt at working with fiberglass so I'm pretty new to all of it. I have an Eldocraft 15B, fiberglass hull. I've removed the cap and cut the deck and transom out. I had a small accident when cutting the deck and went a little too deep near the edge and put a slice in the bottom of the hull. The slice is about 3 inches long, about 1/16" wide and the hull thickness is about a 1/4". Would it be safe to fill that small slit with PB and then glass over the inside, as I can't really afford to grind away the gel coat on the outside and have it re-coated.

Howdy

You can upload pics after posting three times, and can post now by using photobucket, google docs or other site, just link them here.

From what your saying I would say sure, your method should work fine. Just get a few layers on glass on it and it will hold

Put some tape over the slice on the outside. Fill from the inside with PB and then lay down two layers of 1708. First on 1 1/2" wide last one 5" wide. She'll be good as new. the 2nd link below has some good info for what you'll be doing.

Next question. When removing the old foam from the underside of the cap I fount these two places that were on the underside, one under the bow and one under the splash pan. They had what was left of steel braided cable running through them. The cables were rusty and weren't attached to anything and I saw nowhere that they would have been attached. Any ideas as to what they were for?

They are wire hangers. My guess is your wiring was replaced and they might not have been reused. They just took loose wires and ran them thru to help keep them from hanging down

Next question. I'm trying to get together a list of what materials I'm going to need. Using 3/4" plywood on the deck and 2 layers of the same on the transom. How may layers of 1708, woven cloth, and chopped mat would go on the deck and transom. Should both pieces of wood used on the transom be "wrapped" in glass, or just coated with resin before doing the final layup of glass? I know that I'm going to have to fill the corners around the transom and the edges of the deck with PB. Thanks again guys!!

I read the post and printed out the list. Is it safe to measure and cut the two pieces of plywood and laminate them together outside of the hull? The plan is to seal both pieces with resin and then laminate them together with Titebond III. Will the Titebond III adhere to the cured Poly resin that is on the wood. Don't want to risk de-lamination of the two pieces. What would I use to bond the transom that I've built to the existing fiberglass transom area? Also what is a good, not extremely expensive foam, to fill the void between the deck and the bottom of the hull? Thanks again!!

I think that would be a poor plan. Poly resin doesn't have great adhesion by itself. I'd laminate the wood with Titebond then glass it. You do know not to use Poly by itself right? It can't be used as a sealer alone like epoxy can. It needs glass to have any strength and not crack and flake.

No I didn't know that. This is the first time I have ever done any "glass work".
