Ok, opening up a huge can of worms. First, I know bringing this old gal back to her glory is going take time and a few shekels, ok more than a few. Here is what I have;
A 1974 StarCraft Chieftain (Express?) 24? w/ an Eliminator Jet Drive. Engine is a 455 Olds. Per my father, the jet was rebuilt before being a ?yard ornament, IE covered with tarps, sitting on a trailer? for 25 plus years. The last year I have record of it being on the water was in 1990, but some records may be misplaced. Trailer was last licensed in 1994. It ?had? a camper top on it but is no good due to damage from snow loads, age, etc. It has a galley with a alcohol stove and an ice box, port-a-potty in the front cabin area.
I know this is going to be a hard build, and not for the light hearted. Not knowing what is possibly wrong I am kind of going in blind. Engine wise, I am confident I can get the engine going, as I have rebuilt engines before. The jet, parts are very hard to come by, is going to be a challenge. I have been told the bearings are water lubricated, so I am unsure after sitting for so long how they will be. I know most, if not all, gaskets, hoses, belts, seals will need to be replaced. Unknown if the fuel tanks had any fuel left in them, I?m guessing yes. Anyone need some great, well-aged varnish?
I?m guessing dry rot and of the wood, so it will be a gut and rebuild. It is going to take a lot of blood sweat and tears.
Before anyone says, scrap it. Not gonna happen. This is/was my parents boat and my mother recently passed so my goal is to get her back on the water so dad and I can take her out again.
What I am asking for is what I might run into. Parts for the jet, as I hear there might be parts available in the Pacific North West sitting on the shelf somewhere.
This is not going to be a cheap weekend project, but I am not made of money so most will be done by myself and a few friends.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time, and if you need any further information, I will try to provide it. I will post pictures once I have it home and survey the damage.

No one here will tell you to scrap it! Watching someone bring back to life what some would call junk is an awesome process. After you post a couple more times, you can post pics. Post a lot of them, and start reading some old threads; lots of knowledge here. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Well just got her home, well at a buddies shop that is close by. Steering appears to be frozen. Trying to turn the steering I can hear the cable, clank, bang, bump the hull but doesn't appear to be broken. So will be one of the priorities to get fixed. It does appear that the engine was winterized when it was parked. Oil appears brand new. Fuel tanks smell like I could use it for staining wood. Interior is in need of a very deep cleaning. Some upholstery work. New camper top. All on the list besides the normal things, drain old fuel, rotate engine, upgrade distributor to a HEI from points style. Plugs, wires, etc.

Last registration sticker on it was 1987, trailer shows 1992, so that gives a good idea the last time it was in the water.

Already have lots of pictures, will post them when I reach the post count where I am allowed.

Changed all the trailer tires before the trip. Tires looked new, no weather checking but after sitting that long I didn't want to chance it.

Soon the "Kwyt*A*Kanu II" will be back on the water

Here is from another part of the forum about the jet drive in the boat.

"the eliminater jet pump was designed by Mike Brown and my dad's cousins were partners with him. They owned Snake River Marine in Lewiston, ID and were also a boat dealership. They used it primarily on Starcraft hulls...so that is why Starcraft doesn't know much about them...since they were installed on the boats in Lewiston... What was unique about the Eliminater Jet was it was a 3-stage pump and a low RPM/high volume pump compared to a single-stage pump high RPM/high volume pump with say a Berkeley...so it moved more water at low RPM's...thus the success of using a 350 Olds...but the 455 apps were popular in Hells Canyon...Back in 1976, the Coast Guard bought several Cabin Cruisers with twin pumps to catch salmon poachers on the Snake River...It has a water-lubricated bearing...so you need a "Y" fitting attached to a garden hose to run it out of water....just yank of the rubber hose on pump and attach "Y" and turn on hose...part is for engine cooling...part is for lubricating water bearing...it will make a HORRIBLE noise if you start engine without watering that bearing..."

Need to find out how long the steering cable is. After some tinkering, Cleaning points, replaced coil, installed Y to provide water to engine and bearings in jet. A little fuel poured down the Carb, and started right up.

Water pump, fuel pump, need replaced water pump is weeping out the weep hole. Fuel pump doesn't pump.

Engine was a big worry, second was the jet. But no bad sounds at all.

After 30 years sitting things are looking great. Thinking I will upgrade distributor to a HEI style.

It was so great to hear that old olds 455 start right up. Boy that does bring back memories.

I called Valley Boat and Motor in Lewiston, Idaho and was informed that they closed the marina last month and hung up before I could ask any questions. So, that is not longer a resource for information or parts.

On the to do list is to pull the Teleflex steering cable that goes to jet. The PVC jacket toward the rear is all split and broken. Moving the steering wheel the cable shielding looks like a Chinese finger puzzle with no movement of the jet itself.

Also to start into electronics. Hopefully some contact cleaner will solve most of the issues as none of the switches work for; bilge pump, blower, nav lights, wiper (Pull style switches).

The throttle cable/Reverse clamshell for the jet functions perfectly.

Still need to replace the fuel pump and water pump on the engine.

On a side note/question, how many posts before I can post pictures?

Impressive. I'd just fix what you have too and it and run it this summer. The exhaust is different. Must be a muffler devise. Is one broken? I noticed you were looking for one.

Ayuh,..... They're ole aluminum log manifolds, the big humps are the risers,.....

I've got a set kickin' 'round, with no home to go too,.....

This is what I'm looking for. It is made from, I believe, rubber. Where it attaches to the hull, if you look closely at the photo, right below the mounting screws you can see some cracking. Again this is not a priority at this time, but will need to be replaced in the future.

Bondo, you are correct. These risers are not the ones that came with the boat, from the factory. These are an upgrade to help make the boat a little quieter.

On the list today is to remove the steering cable. I soaked it down with penetrating oil and let it sit. Came back later the steering wheel would move with some mild resistance to which I thought, "Great"!!! kept working the wheel gently and it became easier and easier. Thats a win right? No.... while it was moving free the Jet was not moving, the inner cable must have come apart.

Any ideas on how to remove it? It appears to me, at the jet if you look at the pictures that the end of the steering cable is a steel elbow on the stainless shaft that needs to be removed, then pull that end thru the hull and somehow disconnect it from the helm. Once I figure out how to remove it from the helm I will put a piece of rope on the helm end of the cable so that when I pull the cable the rope will follow and will ease the installation of the new cable. At least that is the plan, I'm sure it go according to plan. LOL
