I'd be really careful about putting anything on over 85hp... not sure I would want to pay that fine if you ever get inspected. I know my 79 16' SS has the rating stamped at 85hp max. I figure it's probably the same for yours.

And that's a good point. To tell you the truth, I was not aware of fines. I thought it was just about the structure Of the boat. It makes sense that it would be against the law to over power a boat.

64 - thanks for the info. So 76 and up it is! I would love a newer motor and I will keep looking but pricing is putting me in the older category.

64 - I was on the StarCraft map and see you are near K-Zoo. The old Chief was from Niles. I loved the boat but too many issues and way too big for me to tackle by myself. Ever since I drove over the St. Joseph River, I have wanted to take a ride down it.

anders, I've crossed over the St Joe maybe a couple thousand times, never had a boat on it but I hope to change that soon with my Lone Star.

It looks great in some places and others not so sure.

That is the way I feel too. There are a few here on the site that love them.

Chryslers are good motors. They just have been out of production for a long time. Our 75hp is a good strong runner, and is pretty easy to work on. I do understand the hesitation from some, but I'd buy that in a heartbeat. If it was closer.

in a perfect world, I'd rather spend a little more and get a newer motor. Preferably in the late 90s and up. However, I am not apposed to an older John/Rude for the right price.

What are your thoughts on a 2003 90hp johnson? are they good on gas? I assume it's a 2 stroke. Any info would be great.

I would get the model number and post it over in the Johnnyrude forum.

Lots of good info over there.

I have read the 1st generation of electronic controlled motors were glitchy and expensive to fix.
