at least that corner is , dry fit full transom tonight and it is really tight before epoxy. thinking i gotta sand it some on both sides and go a little extra so the added epoxy wont interfere. may also have to remove splashwell. how did it go for some of you others that have done this?

Don't worry about it being tight the tighter the better. Mine was a tight fit then when I epoxied it up I had to tap it into place with a 2x4 and a hammer.

Everytime you epoxy the one side of the transom hit the edges. I think my edges have about 6 coats of epoxy each. It will drip try to straighten it a bit on the edges with a rag. Make sure to sand the drip marks on the edge before reinstalling the transom don't ask me how i know that. :facepalm:

sounds like a good plan sig, thanks. how about suggestions for filling the screw holes i got from gluing the two pieces together for transom. i glued, clamped and screwed and now got some holes to fill before applying epoxy.

Drizzle epoxy into the holes to fill them, or make some epoxy filler putty to fill them.

thanks jb, will do. next question is about drilling holes in transom. how do i make sure i am drilling straight so i hit the hole on inside brackets if drilling from back of transom? on knee brace and the edge brackets.

You cant drill from the bracket into the transom? From the front?

i believe i could , but still have the issue of making sure i hit hole on other side. any secrets, is it a 90 degree angle for all. also should i drill holes before epoxy?

Some have drilled oversized holes so that the thru bolt hole is in an epoxy plug as well

At a minimum after the holes are drilled, coat the inner surfaces of all the thru holes w/ epoxy.

To tighten down 'flat' against the knee brace & transom skin, the thru bolt holes HAVE to be at a 90* angle to the hull & brace. Right? Otherwise they'd tighten down at an angle, same w/ riveted connections.

You can use a portable drill press rig:

Harbor Freight has a 'similar' one. Others do as well.


Some have made similar DIY jigs.

The best way to drill the transom holes is to put the new wood in and drill them all through. The only ones I didn't do that way were the drain tubes, I just used a sharpie to mark them and drilled them through after removing. Then take it back out and run the bit through again oversizing the holes so you can get epoxy in them when doing the sealing and they won't be too tight.

got some more work done last night. 1st pic is drilling holes (used a piece of square tubing with hole drilled on press for my jig, to get straight holes ) worked real well as i drilled side bracket holes, knee brace holes, holes for transom eyes, and marked drain tube holes. 2nd pic is belt sander i used to sand top of transom down to match the transom skin ( used 60 grit sandpaper ) then took transom out and drilled holes out a bit bigger to get epoxy in them as waterman suggested. and 3rd pic is transom ready for 2 coats of epoxy. all went well and looking for warmer weather to put on epoxy. i did not drill motor mount holes , as i got no power yet and assume mount holes are not universal?

The BIA standard hole pattern I believe applies to all of the mounts for modern outboards.

After looking at your transom pic again, you made a good move not drilling them out because the holes that are in it don't look right to me. For some reason there seems to be too many and they are too small and it wrong locations. I know some of them are to hold on the outside piece. Here is a diagram link to the BIA hole pattern.

agreed, i am glad i waited for now. got 2 coats of epoxy resin on this weekend, 4 coats on edges. clarkcraft 1 to 1 worked real well i thought. and covers the marine grade real well. gonna sand it a bit to smooth out , test the hole sizes with bolts and drill out a bit if needed, and then drop er into place. will post some pics of process. any ideas besides 5200 on bolts, and drain tubes, and also on the aluminum rail that goes along top. seems most use the 5200, just wondering if any other ideas or products you all may have had good luck with. thanks

looking for some more advice from you all. wondering best sealant for thru hull fittings, transom eyes, and fasteners for transom (bolts) and splashwell to transom, also floor deck screws? 5200 or 4200 or any other things you may suggest. thanks

Both work perfect for those applications, the 5200 is technically more permanent than the 4200.

been fishin instead of working on boat. found some nice walleyes on lake of the woods pulling crankbaits.(see below) have not got much more done on the starcraft, but picked up some 5/8 marine plywood for floor ( this boat had 5/8 floor when i got it ) and with a couple coats of epoxy it should be stronger than before. nice hot weather so thinking of getting the epoxy on floor and front console panels now and in winter months working indoors on prepping inside/toprail/ and outside for paint. along with consoles and such. paint in the spring and start putting back together. looking for a fuel tank that will go under floor ( old one did but fittings stuck out above floor and trying to avoid that. see last pick below.
