Ah the old turtle position. No need to scuff the AL, that's what the acid wash and SE primer is for. Check Wal Mart for a jug of Heinz vinegar cleaning solution, it's way easy to use, cheap and works great.

been a little better than a month since time for any tin work due to some work and vacation restraints. but gonna get back at er here shortly. i got er naked as shown in previous posts and plan now is to wash it down, then a vinagar / h20 50/50 wash followed by straight warm water as a neutralizer. let dry real well and tape off the rub rail and bow and transom hooks, and hit it all with a light se rustoleum primer with spray bombs. next a coat of rustoleum clean metal primer ( what do you all think 1 or 2 coats primer ) followed by a light sanding and tack cloth wipedown. then gonna use wog's advice on 2 coats top coat rustoleum professional , with acetone thinner and hardener. any advise or thoughts before i proceed would be great. 1 or 2 coats primer, ? light sanding between coats? anything i am missing or forgetting? also wondering if any of you have ended with a clear coat after decals, and if so does rustoleum got something in the professional line? that hardener really made my trailer nice and shiny. thanks

I only shot 1 coat of primer over the SE and I hate sanding. No clear coat for me and I don't think it really has a place on a boat hull.

I have only used one coat of primer as well with two coats of color with hardener an no clear coat. Even with Hardener it seem to take a lot of time in the hot sun for the paint to really toughen up.

thanks doz, nice to here from you. lookin like one coat of primer for me also, as it would be wise to head what is said by both yourself and h20, both great examples of workmanship to try attain. i know you have done a few projects and assume you are happy with your one coat of primer?

had a small dent in side ( sorry no pic ) so thought i would mention how i attacked it if anybody may be interested. i had the admiral hold a heavy flat piece of iron on outside and warmed it up with torch and tapped with flat side of hammer from inside. worked well, but i beleieve i overheated it . i would guess 2 to 3 seconds with the torch is plenty ( that aluminum heats very fast. ) came out nice, but my suggestion would be very very little heat.

got er bloomers on her this weekend. she has been naked way to long. used spray bombs after a wipedown with vinager and h20 50/50 then a quick wipe with acetone and tack cloth. plan to lightly sand a couple imperfections, wipe again with acetone and get a coat of primer on around thurs or so.

Hey I saw how guys took out hail dents from car hoods using a torch just to heat the surface around the dent and they just popped out on their own. I don't think AL would ever do that but heating sounds like an possible for those pesky dents.

Careful with the acetone, it will take that primer right off. I just used tack cloths to get the dust off after sanding and right before shooting the paint.

thanks guys, after hearing from h20 , i am now planning a light sanding of the self etch, and air hosing it of to get the bigger stuff, and then wipe it down with tack cloth. ( forgoing the acetone ) sound like a better plan?

its northern mn. so you gotta dress in layers. so last night i put a coat of rustoleum professional clean metal primer on her. i tack clothed off, rolled her outside and used the hf hvlp sprayer. went pretty well as i drizzled a little black into the primer to change from white to almost grey ( so i have a little color difference when i paint the white top coat ) set the compressor to 90 psi and the gun to 50 psi and played with the fluid control to get what i wanted. 16 oz of paint and 4 oz of acetone thinner per rustoleum recs on can. i used just shy of 3 mixes, so about 1 1/2 qt of paint. pretty happy with the way it turned out .
next step lightly sand and tack cloth and get some top coat on her. may be monday or so as gonna take weekend to play a bit. thanks for stoppin by, and let me know if you see me going down wrong path. any advice or recs are much appreciated.

had some time this weekend so i dressed her in a gloss white skirt! 2 coats rustoleum professional gloss white. used the hvlp gun with about 40 psi at gun with trigger pulled. covered very nice in my opinion and last coat ended smooth and shiny. 10 oz paint / 4 oz acetone thinner / and 1 oz tractor supply hardener. used about a pt each coat. had a few bugs land in the wet paint as i painted outside. i used a tweezer to pick them out and a quick spray inside shed and shut the door.

next step , gonna put a black halter top on her !
