Re: 1973 16' Starcraft Super Sport new to me

:::UPDATE:::

Was able to take the ETEC and upgraded mechanicals on the old SuperSport out on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER on Saturday!!!!

UFLEX Steering box/cable upgrade.
There isn't hardly any feedback from the motor anymore. I don't know if that is a great thing yet or a bad thing. I do however like that I don't ever have to fight it to go where I want to go... I turn the wheel and it says there..... Overall I think it's a worthy upgrade from the original.

Here is the pic of the new ETEC pushed off from the dock....

well... All i can say is that it is pretty hard to impress me, and this thing just blows my mind. It idles like a car engine... Super quiet.... no choke no fast idle lever messing around... Get in the boat.. turn the key.. bam.. totally BADACE feeling right off the bat. AGAIN i can hardly beleive just how quiet this thing is......

We pushed off and took it out to the main channel and the throttle is just instant... it popped it up with little effort.. Very much so like the old 850.... just hey.. I can talk to the other guy in the passenger seat like I was sitting in my truck or car... SERIOUSLY, I know you are thinkin... man.. this guy is just blowing smoke to justify his new $$$$$ motor.

Well maybe a tinsy winsy little bit. This has been my first experience with any new OB whether it was 2stroke or 4 stroke and that is probably why because I just leaped 40 years into the future in OB technology.

Needless to say I'm very very IMPRESSED thus far. I'm taking it out for my bachelor party this weekend so I expect it to be running around alot weather cooperating...

Congrats!

Might consider moving some weight forward, but if it's quick to plane...............

Yeah.. I'm going to go as is right now and play. I agree though I'd like to move batteries up to the front.. Maybe this next winter unless this gives me problems....

I've heard that the new motors are much quieter. My old Merc is loud.

And the newer they, the heavier they are too. You might be a sitting a little low at the stern, but not all that bad. Playing with moving stuff up front will help that, but if the performance is there, hey - no concerns.

Did you have a chance to get numbers to compare with the 850? Or was the :D in the way?

Congrats on the upcoming hitch-up. Does she know about MBS?

Glad to see you like it a lot SMG. No smoke blowing there, my Buddies 90 Etec on his pontoon is the same way super quiet, instant throttle response, and the dealer told him if it doesn't start in5 seconds of spinning there's something wrong.

AS IT SHOULD BE !

Anyone who has not experienced a "modern" (post ~2000) EFI/DFI outboard engine doesn't know what they are missing ! I have a 2001 Merc 4 stroke. Very much the same experience.

Not sure if I can revive this old thread of mine.... All my pictures seem to have vanished... Anyways... I'm about to rebuild the floors in this 16 foot SS. Thought I'd see if anyone wanted to tag along....

Ohhhhh. K.. well the transom I redid must have had some flaws in some of my methods or when the new motor was installed it wasnt' sealed up correctly.... I'm having to redo the transom as well. :(
I just encased it in 2 part epoxy from us composites.... I think this round I'll be using some fiberglass on the transome as well as the floors. What are are all of you thoughts ther? What ounce cloth should I be using for this stuff? no experience.

I did end up getting the transom out as well as I removed the splash well this round. I'll have to search how do photos now that photo bucket isn't the way I'll be doing it next time.

Oh man, that stinks.

My advice to folks using epoxy is to either go all-in with cloth, epoxy plugs (for fasteners, splashwell drains, etc.), or go another route.

I've been intrigued by the old-timer's formula (boiled linseed oil, mineral spirits, spar varnish)...i'm going to try it on some upholstery backing.

What happened to it exactly? did it delaminate where the boards were joined? grain checking?

I'm not sure what the actual reason is but I don't think I sealed up the splash well drain tubes. The bottom of the transom was all rotten and wet. The 2 sheets didn't de-laminate the tractor press and the titebond glue did its job. I must have messed up on something...
So I"m going to get me from fiberglass cloth for this transom and the floors...Still looking for some recommendations on if 4oz will be the best or what the consensus is from folks that know more about this than me.
TIA.

4oz is better than 0 oz  i've always used 6oz so I can't really speak to it.

Before glassing, I always overdrill my holes, chamfer them then backfill with epoxy+filler.

recent example in my thread for the deck starting with page 89.

Here's me drilling out the plug for my splashwell drain. btw, my transom has been exposed to the elements for 2 years while I got sorted relocating and restarting the project...still like new.

There isn't enough sealer or goop in the world that will overcome lack of protection from the earth's elements. The elements are designed to destroy everything and it will if given enough time, even rocks will succumb. Covers, garages, car ports and protectants on surfaces or best a combination will keep your boat like new. Leaving your hard work to the ravages without proper care will always result in destruction and failure.

Yup.. totally... I will be taking extra precautions after doing all this work as well as some of it twice.. :( I did use the rivet sticky and bought a anvil for my air chisel and some solids.......

So i'm also planning to try and put a Belly tank down in this if I can. I've been doing some stuff out there on sptanks.com as well as looking to see if there are any off the shelf muellers that I can find. This one is the only close option but I think it's not an option due to where they put the filler hose. (FT1826 is the mueller PN.) There isn't enough room for it which is what ultimately took me to sptanks.com and will likely be the route I go depending on $$$ quote. But what do you all recommend for setting it down onto the ribs with and securing it? Anyone have a link of some successes? I just want to plan for whatever is needed as I'll need to account for it in the dimensions of the tank.
TIA guys

Test Pic Post. Don't think it's going to embed into the thread..

Ok. So I got the rest of the console and floor out. Shop vacuumed it all out and then took the pressure washer to it. I gotta ask why they offset that drain plug. Ugh.
tomorrow I’ll make some good measurements with cardboard and make some calls for a belly tank and see what they may recommend for setting it down on to protect it and the ribs.
