Hello,
I'm new to to the forum so try to bare with me. I have a 1973 115 V-4 evinrude. It runs great at high rpm's, but when I come back to idle it sneezes trough the exhaust. New plugs(Champion L77JC4) , getting good fire, carbs have been cleaned by myself and an outboard mechanic. He tried to idle it up just a little and still nothing. He told me to crank it up and spray starting fluid around the powerhead to check for air leaks (I was told it should idle up if it had a leak). Did that and nothing. Compression is between 136 and 140psi(all cyl), fresh gas. Seems to run better with the cowling on???
Any info would be greatly appreciated

Sneezing is indicative of a lean mixture.

You can just about bet that the carburetors need to be serviced. Read, a thorough dismantle, soaking and rebuild.

Not expensive or hard.

You can buy carb. soaking kits at most auto parts stores.

Your carbs are all metal, there should be no issues.

Soaked carbs and still nothing. Still sneezing trought the exhaust real hard and then dies. Talked to previous owner today and carbs were rebuilt two weeks before I bought the boat. Is there any thing else that would cause this problem.
Thanks,
hoss123

Try stuffing a rag over each carb intake with the engine running, one at time of course. If the idle smoothes out then I would re-check the low idle circuit in the carb that makes it idle smoother.
You also may want to check your fuel pump and all of your fuel line connections for leaks.

Tried stuffing the rag over the carb intake, still sneezing and then dieing. Is there any possibility that timing is off.
Thanks
hoss123

Are the idle jets adjustable on my carbs? My cousin told me that his old evinrudes carb idle was.

Not real sure how to check the idle circuit. Manual really doesn't elaborate on how to do so.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

hoss - Did you completely disassemble those carbs, soak them overnight and blow out all passages with compressed air?

If I get a chance tomorrow I will take the carbs back off and try soaking them overnight to see if that may solve my problem's. I'm trying fix it so I can sell it and look around for something a little smaller. I'll get back with ya'll and let you know if this works.
Thanks for the help.
hoss123

Re: 1973 115 Evinrude sneezing

If I am not mistaking, but on your carbs you should have low idle fuel jets, and high speed fuel jets. The low idle fuel jets will be the top two jets on each side of the carbs and will NOT be adjustable. The high idle jets are the bottom two on each side of the carbs, and are not adjustable either. The idle circuit coincides with the low idle jets, and feeds fuel through the inside of the carb. It is very important to make sure ALL of the tiny passages inside the carbs are cleaned and blown out with compressed air. Here is a couple of links that may be helpful.
web page
web page

If you have idle fuel jets, then it would be item number 7 in this diagram.
web page

I hope this helps.

Re: 1973 115 Evinrude sneezing

I think my idle jets are on the upper side of the carb and the high speed is at the bottom on the side. Where item number 7 is there is just a hole there with nothing in it.
Thanks,
hoss123

Re: 1973 115 Evinrude sneezing

I tried soaking the carbs over night and I am still having the same problem. Sneezing and dieing when I try to idle, but does okay at high rpm's.
Thanks
hoss123

Re: 1973 115 Evinrude sneezing

hoss I had the same problem with my 1974. After going through all the same checks you did, I decided to take a closer inspection of the reeds. It turns out that they were not sealing completely. The best way to check them is to remove the reed blocks and hold them up to the light. If you see any light coming in around the edges its time to replace them.
You will have the same symptons you are describing, but usally the sneezing will be in the carbs. If you look real close just as the engine dies you may see a burst of fuel inside the carb.
I am not saying this is your problem, but just one more thing to check.
