Appreciate the input but every product is made of something. There is no magic, what is the basis of this product?

mfgr calls it co-polymer rubber and claims that it does bond to metal. but if you have 4200/5200 or MarineTex Goop, use it instead. i mostly use the Lexel for small jobs (screw holes etc) since i can get it 300 yds from home and it's easy to re-seal and re-use tube.

I have a problem calling every kind of goop i have around silicone even when it isn't. Anyway there is no way we can use 5200, it will be nothing but a mess trying to glaze the glass back into the frames. I'm going to use some Dap window glazing, seat the glass into the channels on a bead and when cured put them into the frames and then finish glazing around all the edges. I plan on using a "wet seal" for the window frames to the cabin in other words the urethane since I can't find the vinyl to replace.

that's what they use to bond the windshields into cars these days so i see no reason why it wouldn't work great for your application

Thought I would post a couple of pics on the small progress I've made.

I have my son in law, who is a glass guy coming over this weekend to reinstall the front cabin windows and finish the top windows. He is bringing what they use commercially to install glass into aluminum frames. I would think that should work.

Once I have all the glass work done it is time to start painting so I can get the beast back on the trailer and mount the motor so I can start rigging.

Now your talking, forward progress comes in big leaps once the motor is installed. It's all the little details along the way that seem to slow down the restore. The odds are against us Chief rebuilders, most of the threads have gone red with only a scant few seeing completion.

will have all the cabin glass back in by end of day. The bottom is already painted so the plan is to paint the sides the put it back on the trailer and paint the top. I am going with white but am going to have a navy blue bootstripe at the top of the sides just below the gunnel. I am thinking about 9 inches wide.

Questions: should I mask off the area that is going to get the bootstripe and not paint it white first or do I paint everything white and then come back and paint the bootstripe over the white?

Paint it all white, then mask for the navy stripe after the white is well cured. Trying to mask twice is a lot of frustrating work. Also you will have some blue on top of white overlap in places which could lead to an off-color division between the white and blue. Does that make sense?

Thanks, I assumed over painting was the right answer but at this point in the project looking for every advantage I can get.

It's not quite the supersize Chieftain you've got, but it's the best I could do. It should still help w/ the winter boat building blues:

I have to admit I have hit a bit of a wall. The windows are all in and they look pretty good but it took me 4 times longer than I thought it would. I really need to finish sanding the hull so I can paint but between work, weather and lack of motivation just can't seem to get it going. The DW is busy this weekend so I will have time so hopefully I can get my lazy butt out there!

I found that it's helpful to always have a seat positioned strategically at the helm throughout the entire project so when my lazy butt next arrived, I could kinda visualize and do the vroom, vroom thing. It's good for morale as long as the DW doesn't see. - Grandad

It's uncomfortable getting caught doing the bubbly exhaust noises with a cup of water.

I'm lucky - my wife sits in the boat and make the noises with me.

The motivational vroom-vroom helped. Spent the entire day in the shop, will hopefully have the first coat of primer on the top sides by end of day tomorrow.

Agreed, will get some out this weekend. Been traveling a lot for work.

I have the transom cap back on which is kind of a mini milestone since that was the first real cutting of the beast. I have the topsides totally sanded and will etch and at least get the first coat of primer on this weekend.

That's great. Interested in seeing the welds, and pick up some pointers. I plan to be be cutting mine soon. I am thinking using a rotozip and a cut blade.
