Hi,
I am in the process of demolition on my project, i have the cap off and floor cut out and working on chiseling and grinding the rotted transom.
My question is about the walls the boat doesn't have vinyl siding or anything its just a bumpy fiberglass on the inside of the hull.

My question is should i remove that to match it to my new floor when I am done? if so..how the hell would i do that it seems to be adhered to the hull pretty well... if not is there a way to maybe grind it? then re-glass/paint it? or a way to match it?

Sorry if it doesn't make sense I can post pictures.

Thanks

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Got any pictures,..??

You'll need to grind it back, 'n rough it up, wherever ya wanta over-lay it,...

If it's raw fiberglass, sand it smooth, 'n paint it I guess,...

You could have added this to your previous rebuild thread:
1970 Wellcraft airslot 165 rebuild questions

Not sure what that is exactly:

But Bondo was correct, anywhere you need to run new glass, like tabbing in a new deck, you'll need to grind it off back to good glass.

The "good glass" would be all the way to the glass of the hull? or til i smooth out the bumps?

Yes, the fiberglass of the hull.

Having multiple posts/threads about the same project or aspect of the project makes it difficult to track where you started, what's been done up to this point, what's been suggested, etc.....

And if someone else at some point in the future researches a 1970 Wellcraft, having just the 1 thread makes it a better resource for them.

My sportcraft has the same kind of splatter paint on the inside sides of the hull. It grinds off fairly easy. I ground it down to the fiberglass wherever I had to glass. I don't think I will grind it all off though because it will take a long time. Probably just paint over it.

I really don't mind it, it made for a good non slip deck, if its possible to match it maybe I could do that.

So, i went and bought a drill master sander/buffer and it sands right off i think i will just sand it all off and start from scratch.

Also was able to get all of the transom out today. I did not find a dry piece of wood in the entire boat.

Re: 1970 Wellcraft rebuilding question

Not sure if what your hull has is the same or not, but it looks like Zolatone. It was (is?) a popular interior finish on fiberglass, sort of a splatter paint, but I'm not sure what it's exact makeup was. It is currently avalable as a paint finish, but I hear it's expensive.

There are a few ways to replicate it w/ paint, but matching it will probably be challenging. It'd probably be better to just redo it all so that it's all the same...
Painting inside of boat and deck .. ideas suggestions?

Re: 1970 Wellcraft rebuilding question

With my (little) experience trying to match just simple interior wall paint i am opting to start from the beginning. We are redoing the entire boat, so might as well include that. Thanks for the info, i will post some updates when I get the grinding done, shouldn't be to bad I tried it out today the only places that may take long are the corners.

Re: 1970 Wellcraft rebuilding question

Hey Guys,
Sorry if I have a lot of questions and thoughts. I am rebuilding my first boat and don't have a really any friends into boating so this is my only source and place to bounce thoughts around.

I am grinding the Zolatone? and whats left of the transom and inside the hull to the hull. I removed all the wood the same way Friscoboaters video's show. My question is right now I am using a 7" sander/polisher, its working well but its hard to find pads for the Velcro/type pad the only grit i can find is 80/150 and seems like using a 36 would be better? Also for the contours would a flapper wheel work better? what type of power tool can you use flapper wheels with(i don't have an air compressor) I am using all the safety equipment respirator/tyvek i have all that stuff being a golf course superintendent I handle chemicals all the time.

While I chip away at the grinding hour here and there, I have been thinking about plans. I would like to add a permanent tank. Noticed a thread someone with a 73 airslot did it under the deck and hope to do it the same way. I am hoping to add some storage; the boat had none before I started demolishing it. my goal is for one of the compartments be for the battery(s). Would converting the area under the steering wheel on the starboard side work for the batteries and could i do the same for the other side as well under the cap on the protside for storage? how would i do this if so? I have been doing a ton of reading and watching video's been struggling to find on adding storage like that.

And my final thought was doing a back to back lounge on the port side and a captains chair on the starboard side.. would that look odd?

Thanks for all the help so far and in the future this forum has already been a great resource.

Re: 1970 Wellcraft rebuilding question

1 more thing I thought of...Right now I have a 50hp Evinrude, on the hull it say's its rated up to 65hp I can get an 85hp Mercury pretty cheap, would upgrading to an 85hp be that unsafe and would i get hassled by authorities a lot if i did this? We usually go up to Lake winnipesaukee and winnisquam both are patrolled a fair amount.

Ben,
As for the fiberglass grinding I used the resin sanding discs on my 4" grinder. You can get them at harbor freight. Woodonglass suggested them and they worked well. I'm not good at posting links but if you click my rebuild link in my signature block and look at post 14 I think it is on page one it shows the setup. I noticed your in Nashua. You probably already know this but there is a harbor freight in Amherst. I live in Milford.

Re: 1970 Wellcraft rebuilding question

You don't want to put anything over 65hp on. Best not to exceed the max hp rating. Batteries are best mounted as close to the engine as you can. Sure, you can put them anywhere but the large battery wires u have to have are expensive.

I bet you can get almost any type pad to fit your sander? Most have a 5/8" shaft. Take the 7" off and put on a 5" backing pad that will handle whatever grit paper you want to use.

I do know the harbor freight you are talking about i am there almost every other day on my drive home checking stuff out. and you guys are both right I did find that out today. Actually got a 7" flap wheel that attached to my sander and its working great got about 3 feet of the hull ground today in 45 mins before the foot ball.
