It'll be hard to tell the splashwell was ever cut out after more primer and a couple coats of paint.

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

Thanks WOG,

I've got 2 coats of topside paint on her now. One last sanding and I'm going to spray on the final coat (well... my brother is to be exact.) He's got the hand for the sprayer and after a less than stellar attempt myself... he'll be finishing it up :)

I'm using Interlux Brightsides on her and I've gotta say... it's decent stuff. The package doesn't recommend a final sanding after the last coat and I don't think I'm going to. It's got a real nice finish to it and if the last coat goes on as I expect, there won't be a need.

After she's painted I can get back in and start mounting hardware and doing the interior work. Really close now :)

I'll post some pics later today of where we're at.

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

Hey Jigngrub,

i went with foam. If I had the cash I would have bought some more pour foam. I had a 2 gallon pour foam kit and ended up using insulation sheets from HD as well. I had already put the deck on so it was a pain in the *****. I had to slice them into 2 inch sections lengthwise and feed them down into the voids through the holes that were left up front where the stringers ended.

I finished up the side boards that I'll be mounting to the interior. I don't have a sewing machine that will cut the mustard and if I did I'd probably mess it up. I did my best with some rolls of foam, vinyl, and a staple gun and it doesn't look half bad.

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

Sacrificed some sleep recently to put in some hours. June first is this Saturday and I've got to have it sitting at the dock waiting to give my Father-in-Law a ride to win our little bet. Here's some pictures of the interior after the side boards were mounted.

From the stern:

From the bow:

My Brother putting the stern trim and splashwell tube in. (because we mounted the motor today) (no, we didn't use nails. He's got the hammer tapping the cap piece back in place.)

And one last pic moving the boat into the house garage to mount the motor. I'm pleased with the top coat, but the sides need a serious buffing and I'll be painting the bottom black (where it's red.)

next steps:

I stained a piece of wood (dark brown) and will be using it as the dash. I've got some hinges, a lock, and a handle that I'll be using to make a door for the glove box. I bought a 4 switch fuse panel that will be mounted to the right of the steering wheel mount and I'm hoping to get this all done today.

Reattaching the seats.

Steering wheel and steering mech

windshield install (including trying to restore the shine)

gas tank and plumbing

lights (bow & stern)

Change the lower end lube in the motor

---Splash test!---

We'll see how many of these I can get knocked off the list in a couple hours today.

Happy Memorial Day!

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

mounted the seats, tranducer for the fish finder, stern light, and throttle control. I painted the green stripe back on the front, restored the windshield, cut out the holes in the dash for the switch panel and glove box, and coated the back side with epoxy.

This week:

mount the windshield, cut the holes in the fiberglass dash for the glovebox and switch panel, and finally mount the dash itself. (oh yeah... some last minute wiring stuff and we're splash testing.

sorry I didn't get pics. I was dead tired and forgot at the end. I'll grab some next time.

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

For sure! Thanks.

Thank you to everyone that provided the valuable advice.

Tonight I mounted the bow light, the hooks on the back, the cleats, and did the wiring. The coating on the dashboard didn't satisfy...so I put another coat and now I've got to wait until tomorrow to finish the dash. I'm licensing her tomorrow and would love to get her out tomorrow or Friday night. Still a bunch of loose ends to tie up...but we're almost there :)

and by the way coolbri... I looked at your boat.... looks fantastic I gotta say. The kicker looks nice. If mine turns out close to that good I'll be happy.

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

Hey all,

Couldn't resist taking her out before she was completely done. After attaching the motor and seats we fired it up and took it out. Motor problems with the first dip and I was troubleshooting. After a second thread opened in the engine section and a carb removal/clean... we took her out again.

43 mph for a top speed on Black Lake yesterday :) My phone broke on Monday and I haven't received the new one in the mail yet...but I'll be sure to get some pics up soon.

Almost everything is done at this point. Just some small items like rod holders, back seat installation, and radio installation and we're cruising. Thanks for all the encouragement and input along the way.

Pics to come :)

Re: 1968 Larson rebuild

I'll have to check what i've got on there. I haven't really paid much attention to the prop yet. Just made sure it was attached :). That was speed on my fish finder btw. Who knows how accurate :)
