Re: 1967 IMP Aztec -- Resto Underway again Suggestions please

BSnB,
thanks for stopping in. I would love to see some pics of the one you did. this winter has had me all messed up. i planned on working on the tinny since the winter weather is "supposed" to be to cold outside to glass and i do not have the luxury that some people ( not mentioning PMs name here) have wiht a warm toatsty, all tools you could need, find a go kart kinda place.....

if i would have known that the weather would have been this cooperative i would have had the bulkheads in, floor done, and grinding on the transom exterior. go figure. so tinny work it is and now to finish it up so i can get this one going again.

My 1984 IMP X190. 305 V-8 Mercruiser, Alpha 1 leg
-new Gimbal Bearing-new starter-new manifold and carburetor (Edelbrock)
-new composite fuel tank & hoses-new deck and carpet
-new motor mount supports

I didn't do any glass work. The hull was in pretty good shape aside from a few scuffs.

The failed gimbal was caused by a failed stringer extension for the motor mount Port side. In the original construction, a couple of wood blocks were stacked under the front motor mounts and the mounts were then lag bolted into that. Both were bad, but the port side was way rotted and on acceleration the engine torque would lift the port side mount up off of the wood block tearing the lags up out of the wood. Not good for the Gimbal bearing! I fabricated two new stringer mounts from stainless, mounted those to the stringers and then the engine mounts to those.

The fuel tank was a large 50 gallon belly tank which was pitted and leaking. JB Weld had been used to try to fill a few of the pits on top, but the fuel smell made it clear that this was a bigger problem. I picked up a composite 24 gallon belly tank and hoses, pulled the deck and removed the old aluminum tank. The tank sat in a compartment between the stringers with a full liner molded to fit over those port to starboard and down into the space between the stringers to hold the tank. The new tank was about half as long as the old one. The liner was in good shape, so I created a bulkhead out of Lexan to divide the space in half and installed the new tank at the aft end of that space. I had scribed and patterned the Lexan to fit exactly, secured it with some stainless angle brackets and siliconed the edges like a fish tank. When I installed the new deck I added two hatches. One round inspection hatch over the fuel tank and a second square access hatch over my 'fish tank'. That access hatch sits between the helm seats making it fairly convenient to reach the iced beverages inside that well-insulated compartment.

Sorry for the hijack...carry on.

Rrumba,

Came across your thread after seeing your comments on the Glastron GT160 rebuild. Your Aztec project interests me because of the drive conversion. In 2010 I rebuilt a 19' AMF Crestliner, but elected to keep the OMC stringer drive. Even though the rig was given to me, I ended up sinking about $5,500 in it (trailer, boat, engine/outdrive) before it was finished. Woodonglas' hit the nail on the head with his comment "how else can you end up with a nice rig for $200 increments" - and have a fun and challenging project too. I love the lines and style of your Aztec too, the interior tray is a neat feature. I did a Kenner Ski Barge that had a deck tray molded with the top cap. We have a son that lives near you in Sugar Hill. When we are up that way I may swing by and say hello. In the future I may convert LIBERTY to a Merc outdrive, so the process you use to patch that hole (and the final look) is also of interest. Keep up the good work - not only on your boats - but your thread as well.

Little late on watching this thread, but since you too are restoring a IMP I thought I chime in. Looking forward to more of your success and nothing yet since April. Please report back soon rrumba!

i am, but in a different manner.... i am enjoying the HEAT while working on finishing it...

right now there is no way i would climb into my bunny suit to do a rough and scuff or the grinding i need to do especially in 100 deg temps. hopefully i can get started again soon though.

thanks for the reminder.........
