Thanks Oops! It sounds like you've been at this a long time.

.

my information comes from many many hours of studying, tons of working hours, and especially ondarvr......he is one of the continents true experts on glass and gellcoat/resin.

every time i talk to him its like going to school......he knows the stuff so well that he is able to dumb it down even enough for me to understand...lol

nothing new to report except that she is being put away for the winter unfortunately. will have to continue when it warms up, or if i can get her in the garage to work on her.

yea, its been cooling off here at night too (mid 40's). Sorry you're having to delay your work. I've got lights under plastic to keep the new transom warm for a few more hours so I won't worry when I take the clamps off tomorrow.

Ok, so a few questions about infusion.............or more suggestion of whether or not to do it.

I was looking at the infusion so i could lay all layers on the stringers and one more full 1.5oz layer of CSM, tape it all up and to it at one shot. i have a buddy with a paint booth who may let me use it to get try and get the stringers competed but then it has to be out in the morning. this would allow me to get it all prepped and ready, pull it in, warm it up, infuse and take it out in the morning. I have watched several videos on it, read up on it on the net, but still would like the experts opinions here before trying to do it and find out that it was the wrong approach.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

um....why infusion.....that is a lot of work for little results......vac bagging, by the time you get set up and turned on......im done drinking beer

once the stringers are installed.....with in 2 hours i can have then bedded, tabbed wrapped and curing (this does not include glass cutting time)

vac bagging will give you lower resin to glass ratios and with a correct and tuned system for overflow and drainage...you will be able to hit the optimum 70% glass to 30 % resin ratio
but on a first try.....with an untested one off system....you will be able to hit 50-50.

.....but you are only talking about 2 or 3 lbs of resin !!! over your stringers......

just do a standard stringer wrap....and you are done in just a few hours....let cure, and you are on to deck time !

Thanks for chiming in oops!. it was just thought to be able to speed the process up and still have some progress made over the winter since i do not have a enclosed work area and only a supported tarp to work under. trying to warm up the substrate would be hard to do. but i got to thinking about it and i think if i put a tarp directly over it and leave the heater and halogen lamps on, that should provide what i need to be able to get it some work done over the winter.

just thinking out loud.......i prefer the manual part of doing it as well, just though this might be faster and better than what i was doing. Back to the tried and trued method.....:D

the tent and tarp method will work well......try and tent the under side of the boat as well and throw another light down there......

if you could get your buddys shop....you could do the strings in just a few ours

Hey guys, first post here! Found your thread while googling "IMP Aztec V". My father and I have just began a restoration on our recently acquired Aztec hardtop. My granfather bought the bought in 1971. He passed away October 29th and we have taken the boat under our wing to rebuild it back to its old glory in my grandfathers memory. Lots of the kids and grandkids learned to ski behind this boat and a lot of nights spent catfishing together. The engine and drive was pulled out in 2004 and updated along with new interior. But he soon fell sick after a heart surgery that he never quite recovered from. The boat has set on the trailer and hoist for a number of years and is in really rough shape. The floor is soft, the front deck cracks and pops if you try to put any weight on it and there seems to be a HOLE in the bottom where the roller on the trailer gouged it.

We originally were going to strip it and take it to a fiberglass shop. But after reading through your thread, we have decided to take on a lot of the structural problems ourselves. Thanks for putting so much time into a great thread, its probably helped more people than you know.

hey waterboy, welcome to Iboats and thanks for stopping in....

It is hard to find the old IMPs and any site with info about them anymore. They are nice boats and cut throught the waves quite nicely. I have some sites/links to some IMP info if you are in need of it, just drop me a pm.

I am slow on her right now due to weather until i can either get her inside or heated up with a tarp and heater but will probably hold off. come along for the ride, the more the merrier and you will get a ton of help from the folks here on Iboats.

Waterboy,

You will quickly learn that some of us on here get a kick of giving each other a hard time.

With that said, I will tell the truth of the matter is that Roger got abducted by a cult known as the starmada and adopted their practice of playing with metal boats. His acquisition of this "tinny mistress" known as a "starcraft" distracted him from this more worthy, more elegant, more seaworthy, glass-boat project.

His glass boat brethren have made appearances on national tv and offered a reward for his return, but other than brief appearances on this thread to say "he is okay and his captors are treating him well" we are not sure if he will ever come back from their commune in the woods.

It's really sad actually. He has even stooped to using excuses like "I just don't have cover or heat." The truth is he won't come back to this project until this little "phase has passed" and gets tired of touring with the groupies, and selling ice-cream and bracelets at "metal boat shows" to fund his new habit.

When you got into the V area in the front, did your glass have copper and silver metal flakes in it? Im starting on ours and have noticed this only in the front under the deck area.

OK, JO and PM, I see how you are, kick a guy when he is down and gone from the boards for a little while....... what big meanines....

waterboy, pay no attention to them..... I feel like i am in the middle of a custody battle, jeez

Waterboy, sorry for the delayed response.

when i got to the "V" in the front, there really was not enough remnants to identify what was there other than the skin of the glass. that might have been some of the old chemilals or addditives they used in the wood way back when.... Not sure.

i will be watching your thread and see how you come out on yours as well. if nothing else, at least to give you some moral support.

I enjoyed reading your thread and am looking forward to warmer weather so you can finish. I have just started my mess, but I am able to keep it in a garage so I will be pecking away at it over the winter. It gives me an excuse to go out in the garage and drink beer. What I really like about your thread is that you asked almost every question that has been popping into my head lately. I will be able to sleep tonight with all of those questions put to rest:)

how is the weather down there any how bud?

it is about 45-50 deg here.....(+5 - +8) and perfect weather....

if you glass under a tarp.....thats ok.....just keep the water(rain) off it long enough for the resin to cure....

Just a quick bump to subscribe to this thread. I finished a small restoration on an '84 IMP X190 last year. IMP's are great boats. Solid, heavy and dry. I'm looking forward to seeing what you might do with the Aztec. I remember having a wood lap-strake constructed Thompson when I was a kid that my dad and I fixed up. I learned to water ski behind that boat with a little 35 Johnson on the back. The lines of your Aztec remind me of that boat...classic.
