Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Not a good week for progress...stress at/about work; older son (lives at home) got layoff notice at his job that he really likes after 2 1/2 months where he helps find placement and living quarters for homeless & kids maxing out of the system (funding cuts); younger son getting ready for us to move him back to college. Wife only currently working part time, these are crazy times. I was able to work at minor details of the seat boards and get them sanded though.

Well, nothing to report on the boat front, but I should have more time to work on it coming up...I'm taking an early retirement incentive I was offered and will be retiring on Sept. 24, two years before I originally planned! A good deal where I got an extra month of service credit for each year I had in (28+), puts me in the sweet spot of over 31 years. Man, stuff this good never happens to me! Woo hoo!

Hey LL, that's Great News on the Early Retirement. Now you'll have all the time you need for that boat. I got about 8 more years of the Office grind before I can hang it up, unless our Gubbament keeps screwin things up and then I'll have to work forever.
Anyway congrats to you!!!!! Enjoy!!!!

I'm just sayin...:D

Epoxy-weird experience Nothing serious, but strange.

I was finally back at it today putting more epoxy on, second coat for the floor and first coat for the seat boards etc. I mixed & applied one batch (US Composites 3:1 type) and all went well. I mixed a second batch & put on a fresh roller, and after about 15 minutes, my plastic paint tray got hotter and hotter, and then after I had dipped the roller and started to roll it out, it just suddenly gelled on the floor board in big stringy gobs instead of rolling out. I quick got a piece of cardboard and squeegeed off the gobs so I wouldn't have to do a ton of sanding after it cured. Then I went to pick up & discard the tray and roller and the tray bottom had begun to melt and the mixture was smoking. Outside temp. was 78 and weather dry & sunny.

No serious consequences, but never had this happen before, using the same materials & technique. Very bizarre!

After removing gobs:

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I just added a poll to the top of this thread, about topside paints. I wasn't quite sure where it would show up, but it looks like it appears at the top of each page.

I've narrowed my choices down to 3, and without starting any big debates that have already been hashed over here a lot of times, I'd like to know which you'd choose if they were the only 3 available, based on your experience, research, hear-say or whatever. Thanks.

LL, good progress on the boat.

As far as boat paints go is seems to me the newer enviro freindly stuff is basically just gonna be a little on the soft side. I used the easypoxy paint and overall I'm very happy with it. But I will tell you if you use the topside paint on the bottom and leave it in the water for extended periods of time, you're gonna have some below the waterline touch up to do.

Plus none of this stuff is as durable as the factory paint, IMO.

I used Brightside on my 14' starcraft and it has essentially been great paint and I have no complaints.

I used rusto on my 16' and have no complaints there either.....

Both durable ..........

Are you going to keep the boat afloat at the lake during the summer??? I think I would go with the brightside then.

Good point from Bob. Having recently seen those pictures of your lake place, if you're planning on leaving it in the water, you need to choose a paint that can handle that.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I'm hoping that by the time it's in the water, I'll also have a lift to hoist it up every night.

After all the reading I've done on the paint subject, I'm biased toward Easypoxy, but now I wonder if I really need to spend that much, or should go with the Rusto. The problems I had with the gray Rusto. Marine on the interior seem to have abated since the paint has aged significantly. And you know how it goes, the further along the project gets, funds begin to dwindle, you decide to retire, reality sets in, and you adjust your vision. ;)

I see you are planning to put a 50 hp Johnson on this boat. Are you going to keep both batteries in the back, or shift them to the front for weight distribution? Trying to figure out what I am going to do. In a similiar situation. Let me know.

Thanks,

M

Hey LL,

I trully believe with any paint it all lies in the prep. I KNOW EZ hates his Easypoxy on his tinboat but others on here love it. Same with Brightsides etc... I am getting ready to use Easypoxy on my GLASS hull but I have research the heck out of the prep and plan to follow Pettits prep instructions to the letter. Others that have done that have seemed to have had Great results. If the hull is prepped and primed appropriately and the application techniques are followed i.e. temps, humidities etc... then you can probably use any of them but there seems to always be an exception to the rule. EZMOBEE is a case in point. He followed the rules but had poor results. Can't seem to pinpoint the reason. I don't know how to vote or what to tell you. Go with your GUT is all I can say.

It is JUST A BOAT! Get it done and GO FISHIN!!!!

Hi Catfish,
I don't know how much help I can be at this point, I'm only going to have one battery, for starting. I'll also have running lights, but extremely unlikely that I'll even use them. At this point, I really have no idea how the thing will plane with the setup I'm intending.

I contacted Jamestown distributors with a question about Pettit Easypoxy and here's an excerpt from the email:

Hi,
I am planning to repaint a dark colored aluminum boat, with mostly sound paint, using Easypoxy Red, by the roll and tip method.

After scuff-sanding the surface, is it recommended to apply a coat of 6149 EASYPOXY WHITE UNDERCOATER before applying the Easypoxy Topside paint?

Thanks.

Reply: If you are going over paint on the aluminum boat then apply the primer directly over the paint after lightly sanding If you plan to apply over bear aluminum you will need to treat the aluminum with a two part Etch primer available from Pettit.

Straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. So that's what I plan to do. By the way, it may be heresy to admit this around here, but I don't fish!:D:D:D
