Hi fellas!
My name is Gary, I've been browsing your forum for awhile now. I really admire the work I've seen here. It gave me the bug!
I just drug home a '64 Starchief about a week and a half ago. Luckily I was able to talk the seller way down on his price.
She's ugly and mostly rotten, but hopefully she'll have a nearly complete makeover by summer.
The hull is in pretty good shape. Most of the wood is nearly earth again. The motor turns over, but doesn't run.

At this point I've got here nearly gutted, the motor is disconnected and should be out by the end of the week.
I'll try to keep this thread updated with my progress, and I'm sure I'll have plenty of Q's for the gurus here!

Okay I'll shuddap here's the pics.

And a question: Did the 18' Starchief come with an optional marine toilet up front in 64?

We like you already, G64. Pics without even asking. :thumb: It looks like you got good bones. What kind of motorvation was hanging on the transom?

Welcome the Tin DryDock. Ask away and have fun.

Welcome Gary, looks like a real good project and your well on your way. As GA said you already paid your dues with the photos, but know you have proven you know how to post them so you will have to keep them coming.;) Is that a 110 Mercruiser in the stern? As far as the potty in the bow maybe jbcurt can answer that, he is wealth of info on the vintage SC's

Welcome and what a nice looking Starcraft. You've already scored points with us by posting pics! We all love looking at some good tin boat porn. Great start, and I'll be tagging along as well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Glen, have to see if I can come up w/ info ;)

If there's room in your planned layout to accommodate a marine head, I don't see any reason not to, if it'll keep the Admiral happy.

Grandad added a really nice 'hidden' head at the stern of his resto. For privacy on his, you raise & lower a privacy screen as needed, but since yours is 18ft, is space more at a premium under cover of the cuddy or at the stern?

1964 looks to have had no rear cabin bulkhead, so if you're planning to put it back similarly, privacy is still a problem w/ the head under cover of the cuddy.

'65 Starchief definitely did have a space for an optional marine head, and no rear cabin bulkhead:

Not sure if you're planning a factory similar resto, but anything from the 1960's/70's isn't going to meet current regs for marine heads. So, if you want 1, find a model that suits you and your needs, and make your new layout accommodate it. I really like Grandad's solution. And his would leave more space under cover, for possible overnights.....

:welcome to iboats:

Glad you found us here at channel tin! I was starting to have Chief withdrawals since 4 of us hit the waves this year with ours. Looking forward to seeing another winter SC re-builder with a hangar.

Nice looking hunk of Chief tin you got there :thumb:

Nice thing about a rebuild is you can do whatever you want. There is probably room in the front cabin for a portapotti, under one of the bench seats/beds.

Here's an Islander pic out of the 1996 catalog, new ones have more and better pics.

You could a put porta potty under the V berth and slide it out. And some form of a curtain between the cockpit and cabin.

Hi G64. jbcurt brings up a good point about marine toilet regulations. I don't know where you're located, but Port-a-potti's are illegal here in Ontario. I don't agree with the requirement that marine toilets must be fixed in place, but my boat is now in compliance anyway. I believe the same requirement for fixed toilets applies on the US side of anywhere on the Great Lakes, but I don't know for sure. Various states may have lower requirements for inland lakes and rivers, although these are actually more sensitive to pollution. - Grandad

welcome to the forum. I'm not a tinhead (yet - I keep getting close) but only recommendation I have is to keep the color. Vintage...

Welcome G! Nice looking boat and ya... your dues are paid in full for sure --- pictures AND you've already torn it half apart! Keep the pics coming cause then we know there's work continuing!!

As an aside --- I found the horse head in the water in the pic's that JB sent somehow out of place... I mean what were the marketing guys thinking? Was the lady going to ride out to the boat, hop in the boat and just leave the horse there??? :)

Keep up the good work there G...

That's a real cool old Starcraft you've purchased! What are your plans for the cabin bulkhead?
