If that pump housing is made from aluminum it will need bathing with penetrating oil and heat for awhile; if it's plastic prying should be enough. To pull it with the driveshaft you'll have to undo the bearing carrier nut (the one the propshaft goes thru) pull out the reverse gear and bearing, then undo the bolt that holds the pinion onto the DS.

It’s a metal housing . I was afraid to use to much heat . I have the prop shaft out already . So taking the pinion gear off the end of the DS would be the next step in removing the DS right ? Is that nut reverse thread ? Grind down a wrench to fit as flat on the nut as possible then turn the DS with some vise grips ?
It should pull right out after that right ?
Is there anything that will fall out once removed ?

Put the DS horizontally in a vise then put a rag inside the housing to prevent the wrench from hitting the side then turn the nut off, when it's off you can tap on the housing to knock out the shaft. The pinion gear will be loose and might come out first.

Haven’t forgotten about this project .. Just been on hold . One thing for sure is I really miss GA ..He was never one to judge ..Unless it was in a jokingly manner and you needed it .LOL! He was always there for me when needing help and a good laugh .. And thanks everyone for the guidance on these motors ..
So now back to the problem at hand .. I have heated and soaked the water pump base housing over and over and over again . I think it’s stuck on one stud . Seems open and the penetrant flows right through the other 2 studs ..
I haven’t taken the DS out yet . Not sure it would really help much getting the housing off ..
Should I try and unscrew the stud with vise grips . My luck I would just wring it off ..
I seem to be at a stand still .
Does the DS bearing sit inside the water pump base ?

Those Pump Bases have that big o-ring on them that can make the Base feel like it is Epoxied in place
The Bearing is below the Base, but held in place by the base and Shims

Taker the nut / bolt off the bottom of the driveshaft.-------Protect driveshaft from damage by wrapping some beer cans around it.----Clamp driveshaft in a hefty vice.-----Have assistant try and drive the gearcase away from driveshaft.----Use 2X4 lumber on the gearcase, along with small sledge hammer.

That tab washer is in the way of getting a wrench in the bolt on bottom of DS . Am I supposed to just bend it down out of the way ?

Would that bolt happen to be a left hand thread or something silly like that ?

Got the shaft and housing out finally. Should I go ahead and replace the DS bearings while it’s open .
I also have a question on the shift shaft assembly . Debating on digging into that while it’s opened up . I have seen videos of the shaft turning freely . I can not turn it by hand . Is this how it should be or should I be able to turn it .
I have heard horror stories of getting the ss back together image.jpgcorrectly . I’m I opening up a can of worms for no reason possibly ?

It would be easier to inspect them if they were Clean. It is hard to tell if those are pits in the Rollers, especially on the Needle Bearing inside the Roller Bearing, or just Dirt.

Bearings are aren't all that Expensive, beats being broken down in the Middle of a Lake. However when replacing a Bearing, sometimes Measurements for Backlash/Endplay and the changes to Shimming are required.

Ok , I’ll clean and reinspect bearings .
Any thoughts on the shiftshaft question ? Are there anything I need to lookout for should I dig into it ? Just apprehensive on screwing something up by mistake ..
