Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

I have these primed too. It would just take way to much time to remove all the red my neighbor added and to try and repaint just the inside white like it was originally. Plus they are pretty scratched up and faded. I haven't decided exactly what color yet.

I hosed off the bigger pieces last night and I will prob start sanding and painting them tonight.

I kinda jumped to the engine because once it's done I can take it in for service. By the time it's done being serviced it should just be about the time I'm wrapping up the boat.

Okay, but don't paint that cowl and get it lookin nice and then trust the guys down at the shop with it...take your motor in for service without the cowl. Nice work, would love to hear what needs to be done on the motor and of course, want to see pix of this whole rig screamin' and flyin' on the water after you wrap it up.

Thanks guys! TM- no doubt. I have no intention of taking it there withe the freshly painted top.

I basically want all the wiring replaced- it's original and in pretty rough shape in spots.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Tonight I did some more painting on the cowl.

Before that- I had to paint the chrome trim pieces because I couldn't get them polished up to like new. Instead of going with chrome paint I used metallic aluminum because I thought it would cover better. It definitely covered real nice! I'm very happy with it. If you look at the original motor from the owners manual they have the back pieces center painted red. Do you guys thing I should paint it red again or go with the blue to match the boat??? I'm leaning towards blue. I already changed some from the original so I figured why not a little more. Here they are

Heres the original

I got the emblems painted- gold metallic- it's the closest I could get to the previous gold.

I got the white sprayed- there's about 6 coats on there!

I got the bottom portion of the cowl painted charcoal metallic. 2 coats is more than enough with the evinrude paint- like I said a couple days ago this stuff is like glue when it goes on!

Then I started sanding the top and realized there were spider cracks. So I started to chip them away and it kept going and going- right down to the fiberglass! So I ended up with about a 6"X8" area that was bare down to the fiberglass. So I put some csm on the underside(I hate glassing!) to beef it up a bit. Then I used filler on the top. I'll sand and hopefully pain ti tomorrow.

That's it for tonight. Goodnight!

What kind of paint are you using on your hood? I've got mine ready to go but haven't decided on what kind of paint to use. I'm using OMC/Cobra charcoal on the rest of it but the cowl is going to be white. Did you primer it before hand? It's looking very nice, by the way. I'm glad you went with the charcoal. Looks rich.

TC- I put a picture of the white I'm using in my photobucket. It's the soooped up rustoleum painters touch x2 coverage gloss white.

I didn't prime the white or the charcoal areas because the paint on there was in good condition. I will be priming the red on the top for obvious reasons:)

thanks- I think the charcoal gray looks really sharp too! And it goes on real easy.

Het Mick,

If you haven't already thought of it... you can take a fine sanding block and sand the "evinrude" emblems, exposing the raised edges (looks really sharp), and then give them a coat of clear to protect... just a thought. Looks great man!

TC- I forgot to mention. I did sand with 150 just to scuff up the old paint. Then I used a scotch pad in between coats.

I'll post later but if you want a sneak peek of how the cowl came out then check out my photobucket link.

Isaac- Nice to here from you - haven't seen you on here in a while. Thanks for the compliments! I will for sure have some videos of her getting wet!

Today I got the cowl finished, well except for waxing it.

Here are the pics. Some of them look like the paint is bad- it's just shadows of the trees.
After the 3rd coat of evinrude charcoal gray she had enough

And here she is all finished. I attached the top piece and bottom piece and then put the spieces back on just for the pics. I will take them all back off tomorrow so I can wax her after the top has the night to set.

I made some changes to the paint scheme. I kinda had too based on the shape some of the pieces were in. I also went with the blue of the trim piece just because it matches the boat paint.

Pretty close to original. Even though it's not, I still think it's a head turner!

I have to prioritize now and figure out which direction I need to go here to get this thing done. I'm low on funds and need need to get the trailer, seats, lexan, and have the motor wiring and tune up done. I think my next step is to get the trailer. This way I can get the boat on it, clean out the floor with a pressure washer, and then paint the floor and walls.

I still need to paint the lower half of the motor but I need more evinrude paint- I'm out!

I gotta think about it in the next day or two??? I need a loan!!!

That cowl looks great- You would never know that it wasn't original if you didn't have the brochure to go by. It's going to look good on that boat!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys!!! Tonight I'm going to cut out the carpet for the floor. Any simple suggestions how to keep the carpet easily removable. I like the idea of it for tubing and family time. But fishing time I would like to take it out. It's the cheap/ thin indoor/outdoor carpet from HD. I'll post pics later.

I'm also going to start prepping the lower half of the motor for paint. I may take some things apart just to see the inner workings of a boat engine.
