Welcome aboard Pixmith

Now that is one cute little tinny you got there with great lines. :thumb:

Please tell me that you're not planning on ripping the bow open and making it into just another fishin boat.

Congratulations! I rescued my 1965 McKenzie Cherokee Playboy from being buried for a goldfish pond. Scroll to the bottom of the "forums" page and click on the C section for Cherokees. I have some pics posted there of a 1959 brochure that was for sale on ebay.

Cool boat! And welcome to the Aluminotti! I'll be interested in seeing how your project goes along! It looks like it is in good shape to start and the enclosed bow adds a lot of character!

photo252415.jpg attach10275847.jpg hey thanks guys, I'm going to keep it as original as possible with only minor modification. I am an aluminum boat builder by trade but have never dealt with a riveted hull. All boats I build are welded. I'll have to make some decisions on rebuilding the transom to begin with. im considering building an aluminum plate with internal structure for the aft and interior sections that have rotted away. the other option im looking at is coosa board.

For our Starcraft boats we use 3/16ths diameter brazier head rivets in a 2117T4 alloy for structural components. Air hammer with regulated air pressure and a brazier head rivet set.

Im thinking ill take a micrometer to the exposed rivet shafts and try to find replacements. ill look into ordering a decent brazier set soon.

do you use any washer on the back side of the rivets?

The rivet shaft will be swollen from being bucked so I don't know how accurate that measurement will be. 5/32nds is another possibility but I would move up to the next size 3/16" if they were the smaller rivet. We also use 5200 to seal any replaced rivets below the waterline just in case as some of the holes become oblong.

I used Coosa for a transom on an 18' starcraft Starchief. If you decide to go that way I can probably give you some suggestions about how to use it. Short story, it is light and will never rot, works nicely, but is expensive and hard to source unless you are near a supplier. You would probably have to buy a whole sheet, but might have some left for other things. For a small boat you may want to use a very good grade of Marine ply and seal it well and it will likely outlast you.

Very nice project and you will take to rivets easily with your experience. They are a joy to put in unless you have touchy neighbors close by.

Just ordered the rivet gun and tooling. Found a local guy that will blast the boat with plastic media inside and out to remove leftover paint and grime, the interior is the worst obviously. I'm thinking after that I'll tackle the transom rebuild.
