Another possibility is a sloppy stator plate. The point gap might be moving during low rpms such as idling and centrifical force holds the plate stationary as rpms increase. My friends motor was doing the same as yours, rough idle but as soon as you increase the rpms it smoothed right out. He tightend up the plate and now it idles good.

Re: 1958 sportwin will not idle

hi again,
1958 evinrude 10 hp sportwin 10016, an update, took off powerhead to check lower seal. lower seal was fine. now im moving on to the possibility of a sloppy strator. there is play but how much is acceptable? there are 4 bolts that tighten the plate to the retaining ring. i see no other means to tighten the plate. perhaps the aluminum ring and or the brass support are worn leading to to much play?
thanks in advance
phil

howdy,
i have found a armature plate support and a armature retaining ring on ebay. about a $70 investment. hate to throw another good chunk of change at a gremlin. does anyone know how much play(wobble) is acceptable on this strator plate?
im thinking maybe getting new points a cheaper shot in the dark.

Another member reported he had a bad set of new points right out of the box. I sure would try that before replacing the armature plate and retainer ring. Regarding your question of how much play, I cannot find anything definitive but believe it should not wobble. Movement should be smooth and easy by hand. Will keeping digging on that issue. Also, the link below will get you to an online public library with non-factory manuals scanned if you need info. Good luck!

hi, ordered a set of new points. still waiting for them to arrive. i read the thread and flipped the retaining ring ,flat side up now. the strator is now tight with no wobble. maybe too tight? when looking at my parts manual it looks to me that the retaining ring goes bevel side up. i follwed your link to a online service manual and that diagram looks to be bevel side up also. page 5 if you care to look.
motor starts but missses every few seconds and bucks hard to the left. adjusting the needles have no effect on rpms.
ill update as soon as the new points are in.
thanks to all again
phil
