Soooo.... like I mentioned, someone broke the water tube. It broke right beneath the bushing/nut at the top of the lower unit. I looked in the manual, and I looked online, but I can't for the life of me find out how to get the remaining piece out. Can I hammer it out downwards, into the lower unit, or do I have to get a rod and hammer it upwards? I already got the powerhead off. (It was just a little bit heavy.😂)

I sprayed it with PB Blaster, so that should help if I can find out how to get it out.

I would love to help I can’t quite picture what you are saying. All I can say is try and remove it in the reverse of how it would be installed if that makes any sense.

That makes plenty of sense. The only issue is, Idk how it is installed on this model, so I'll just try to explain it better. I have the power head off, and the entire gearcase off, so all that's left is the lower unit housing. The water tube comes up inside of the housing, and then for the last about 2 inches goes into the aluminum. Someone broke it off right there. And I can't find out how to get it out now.
I hope I did a better job that time, please forgive me if I didn't. I tried putting pictures but it won't let me.

if you can have an exact diam. tube maybe you can guide it over the stuck of tubing and hammer out the broken part dowwards. apply a release agent if possible to help things slide out.

if you have reasonable access where it is broken you could try freezing the joint with a can of common Dollar store keyoard spray held upside down (work outside) freezing could create a thermal shock and reduce the diameter of the exhaust housing section where the tube is stuck

work fast from the bottom end to twist & pull it out

So it can come out either upwards or downwards?

Just looked at a 1974 model 40 HP.---Yes, same water tube part # .----Clearly it comes out the top.----Should not be a struggle to remove it.

I just got it out. I used some heat, then I had to knock out the bushing that tightens it and holds it in, then I got a large bolt and screwed it into the broken copper tube piece and pried on that, and the tubing piece came right out.

Now I'm debating whether to try to weld/solder the tube to try to save on the project, or buy a new one.

Sent you a reply.
The paint looks great on that motor.
Thanks!
The motor is in really sweet condition, I don't think it was used too much. And just a point of interest, the boat I have it on in the picture was made by Cadillac (Not the one that made cars!) in the 1950's. I want to strip all that paint that someone sprayed on the boat off, and repaint the trailer.

Does anyone know of a replacement for the seal that seals the shroud? I can't find one. And ours is all dry and cracked up.
