I was able to get the motor started and running. Sounded great. Shut it off and tried to restart it. It would start sounding like it was going to turn over and then sudder real bad and that is it. Cant get it started again. Where do I start troubleshooting? Thanks.

id start at the plugs/spark, if there is good fire on both, try putting a few drops of fuel oil mix directly into the plug holes and see if it will fire up that way. and are you using a pressure tank or has it been converted to fuel pump?

It has been converted to fuel pump. I am going out to check the plugs.

No please dont, 24:1 is the proper mix.

You arent trying to use the choke are you for a warm start?

Are the coils original? If they are cracked they wont run right and will need to be changed.

How do I go about getting new coils? Is this something a newbie can do?

Pull the recoil. It is held on by 3 screws. Then remove the inspection port cover on the flywheel. This will be 4 screws. Rotate the flywheel clockwise and inspect the coils. If they are cracked/brittle you found your problem. Post pics of them and we can go from there.

Do these older motors need to warm up before they will run right?

Maybe start with NAPA stores they market Sierra Marine parts.

If they break from dry rotting then yes.

Go pull the recoil and inspection port and check out the coils. Without inspecting them you are just going to be running circles.

Re: 1957 evinrude 35hp problems running

Well, the guy I got the motor from said it was great. he was using it on a 14 al boat and it was to fast. said he could do about 45. under the cover looked good. he said the carbuator was rebuilt. looks like it was. got it home and could not get it started. there where no clamps on any of the lines for fuel. I put clamps on and was able to start it. then i started do what i started the post with. now i can walk out a start it, but now it is not pumping water. going out to take pics now.

Just because it starts in your driveway does not mean the coils are not cracked. Just so you know.

If it is not pumping, dont run it again until you replace the impeller.

Re: 1957 evinrude 35hp problems running

Someone cut the vaccuum line to the cut out switch and removed the lead, that should be remedied.

Nice that the fuel pump conversion was done for you. What is going on with the tiller?

Looks like a Lark with a BigTwin hood. Also. the decompression lever is missing...no big deal unless you're "pull starting."

Either way, they're great motors when tuned!
