A light sanding and 2 or 3 coats of white satin finish paint will make that transom sparkle like a diamond, and you'll never notice the slight imperfections.

Yea, we're good. Not going for perfect. Never been, so not now either....

Even though that's not what I tell the Admiral. Esp at my annual review for rank advancement :D

Re: 1957 Duracraft Duraflite Custom

Thanks Trooper.

No boat work after work today :cold: Maybe some Friday during daylight or later. Sat is on deck for a couple hours prior to noon. Sun is off the table. Low of 12F. Hope to get a coat on the other side of the transom before then. Got something to do on it first, so we'll see.

The face that's currently coated is the forward face.

Alright, now some planning stuff:

TH_zps8cae8785.jpg

I can leave the original handles in the original location. They are fairly beefy aluminum handles that 'fit' the look of the boat. But they won't be great trailer tie-downs and definitely won't be tow eyes for whatever might be towed.

So, I can either keep the handles in their original location or not. If I put them back on, I'm really leaning towards original location.

That leaves tow eyes/tie-downs. If I swap out the handles, I was thinking of reusing one of the handle's holes.

Upper or lower? And how to place the eye: Angle to match transom shape? Angle to match handle's angle? Horizontal/Vertical?

Or to completely gum up the works, are beefy aluminum handles rated to be good tie-downs? Tow eyes?

I have some pix to take

Looking good from over here too!

I vote to loose the grab handles unless you plan on using them to load the boat. Nice stainless stern eyes at least have a dual purpose without worry.

Hello Kitty!

Luv it...

If you replace handles I would think the lower holes...just my preference...I think the hold to trailer would be better from there..

So, Troops going on the list too I see............ :watermelon:

Between working 8-4p & back at 7p, I managed to run over to the super secret skunkworks boat building facility & lay down a coat of epoxy on the back side of the transom ply. Please excuse the verbose-ness of the text:

Set the box on broil for about 30min & shut down the propane & buttoned it up for the night:

Spread it thinner & skipped the waxpaper.

Before working again tomorrow am, I'll swing by & give it a once over. Might sneak in a 2nd coat on 1 side or the other.....

Big push to get X amount of work done before Tues pm, so not sure there will be any further boat work after tomorrow am until after Turkey day....

Thanks for swing thru fellas.

Neat JB. I was about to say (guess I am saying) you should have put a Starmada logo under the butta, but this is a DuraCraft.

Do you remember who listed a bunch of Starmada member names under his floor epoxy? I'm drawing a blank.

Starmada emblazoned on the down side of a deck? Nope, don't think I've ever seen it. For sure not in any of the recent/current threads... But I don't think it was in any of the past threads I read thru........ I'm usually really good at remembering odd details, and that list should have stood out.

Waiting for a crew to finish for the night, and stop by w/ equipment that was a complete & epic fail this evening. Gonna be a long weekend....

But engine hoist pickup is 8am :) Have to wait & see how much use I can get out of it.

Leaving the grab/carry handles would retain the retro/nostalgia look I would want if it were my project.

Re: 1957 Duracraft Duraflite Custom

^^^ Yep, That's the main reason I'm considering putting the handles back on.

Won't end up an accurate 'back to original' resto, but at least I'd like it to be functional & be somewhat authentic in appearance.
Does that ^^^ make sense?

No radical paint, no changes to the tin or layout, etc..

Cool idea JB, but with the job your doing sealing up all that wood, it will be a hundred years before some has to open that time capsule.

I Love this idea, we all need to leave little treasures for future restores/rebuilders to find. Very cool indeed.

Put the handles back for sure. I'm planning on using mine for tie downs. I have no doubt that they will hold just fine, they are designed to hold UP the boat being carried so holding it down should be no problem too. I just have to extend my trailer to have somewhere to hook to back there. I love the original look they give.
